The Ultimate Console Gaming Chair

BamelinBamelin Registered User regular
edited September 2007 in Games and Technology
It's been awhile since I tackled this topic at G&T and last time it spawned some really interesting pics of the seating that folks use for their gaming chairs. I'd like to share my thoughts on 3 different gaming chairs I own which are kind of different from the norm and I consider to be top contenders for the title of "Ultimate Console Gaming Chair"

LoveSac

LoveSac's are like the Ferrari's of Gaming Chairs ... expensive as hell but damn sexy. And Comfy.

dsc01063cz4.jpg

I've only had my "PlayerSac" for a couple weeks now, but it is rapidly becoming the only thing I'll sit in when at home. The filling inside LoveSac's is called DuraFoam ... basically shredded foam that doesn't decompress over time the way Sumo's and Fatboy's do. It's a different feeling though ... while Sumo's and Fatboy's provide comfort through their stiff support of every part of your body, LoveSac's are like falling into a reclining bed made of memory foam in the middle of your living room. They have removable washable covers as well which means you can actualy make it look presentable in the living room.

Seriously, the LoveSac's are incredible. I wrote a review article for the "PlayerSac" but it's not up yet. (edit: it's up) As a Canadian I'm also really happy LoveSac finally decided Canada was worth shipping to.

Sumo Lounge and Fatboy

I'm lumping these two together as they are both very much alike. So much so that one can only scratch their head in bemusement at the similarity. Fatboy claims that Sumo infringed on their patent and that both companies are involved in a lawsuit. All of that aside though, do Sumo's and Fatboy's make the "Ultimate" Gaming chair?

My better half was not impressed to come home and find the couch replaced with a big orange beanbag from Fatboy. Not impressed at all.

But is it comfortable? Hell yes.

I also have a silver Sumo which basically looks identicle to the Fatboy and feels essentially the same. I'm sure somebody from 360A still has that old "Oh Noes Bam killed the beanbag pic" lying around ... but essentially Sumo and Fatboy Beanbags shape to every conform of your body. I've spent some of my most comfortable gaming hours sitting in a Sumo or Fatboy over the past year ... In terms of economy you really can't beat an "old school" beanbag although you will have to replace the filling every once in awhile as the beads inside "decompress". I recently did a review article on the Fatboy which has pics and stuffs but essentially it says the same thing I'm saying here ... they are comfortable as hell and make great gaming chairs for dens, college dorms, and basements. For Living rooms and smaller apartments though you might want to think twice.

So there you have it ... my current "top 3" ultimate gaming chairs.

What do you guys sit in while gaming?

I have an old, squeaky, rocking armchair that I found under a pile of old clothes in our storage room. It's really comfortable but the squeaking bothers me.

That LoveSac or whatever doesn't look that comfortable to me. I know that it isn't a beanbag chair but it looks like it has the same support (or lack of support) that a beanbag chair does. I've never been fond of chairs like that.

I am considering building my own gaming chair, complete with cup holders and a hatch in the side for various remotes. More than likely I will end up retro-fitting my existing reclining chair. more than likely it will end up looking like shit.

Cheapest lovesac I've seen is like $170. That's really spendy, but the amount of time spent in a chair while gaming is considerable, so it's a worthwhile investment I guess. My question is, do they have good back support at all? Last thing I need is an obscenely comfortable chair that worsens my posture.

Son of a bitch. The LoveSac looks really nice... and I just missed a 99% off event in NYC. D:

I'm going to cry myself to sleep now.

As for my favorite gaming chair... it's a 1970s brown leather lounge chair. My father bought it weeks after moving to the US for the first time, took it with him when he moved to NY from CA and we've had it ever since. I stole it when my parents moved because it doesn't match the decor of their new house. <3

What they need to do is get a bean bag chair

and put speakers in it. Like subwoofer grade, so you feel the explosions.

I love the banana chairs like the AK designs, however, for these chairs to be usable, they need to have a higher headrest so I can just let my head lie limp while sitting on the floor perfectly angled to stare at the TV.

    Here is my honest opinions:

I can say without a shadow of a doubt the Sumo and Fatboy's offer great firm back support ... Sumo even claims that orthapedics have given them a seal of "approval".

LoveSac's I think also give good back support but they are definately "softer" than Sumo's and Fatboy's. Still firm (like memory foam firm) but soft. I found that I needed a pillow to get proper neck support in the LoveSac (as you can see in the pic I linked above). I just finished up a full review article on the PlayerSac which should be up sometime tomorrow.

If I had to choose between the 3 chairs I think right now I prefer the LoveSac, but that's in part because I can put it in my Living Room without it looking like something from the Romper Room or a circus. The Sumo/Fatboy I think would make great basement gaming entertainment centre seats, and are also really great if you have teens. (take this with a grain of salt though, I've been using a Sumo for almost a year now ... Got the Fatboy recently and the LoveSac barely two weeks ago)

I got the "Espresso Plush Suede" Cover. It's one of the premium covers ... an extra $170 for the PlayerSac one. I have to say though the cover makes the Sac fit in perfectly in my main room. I'm 18 stories up in an apartment so space is premium ... I don't have a den to put my toys, I have to share the space with my wife ...

I think that the expensive covers are worth it if you plan on integrating a LoveSac with your other living room furniture. In the picture below you can see the edge of my brown couch in the top left corner ... the sac cover colour and material fit in fairly well with the couch colour and material.

This was the biggest problem for me playing on my couch ... I tended to lean forward (often for hours of gameplay). As I've gotten older I've found I can't do that shit anymore, it hurts my back too much. The LoveSac and the beanbags give far better back support than my couch which is why I started using them

    Bam loungin'

Nice. My lady and I will be moving into a new place after the winter, so I'll likely pick up something like this. Currently most of my gaming is done in our bedroom, but once we move, we'll probably set up shop in the living room, so I'll need something comfy, yet classy. I think I can get her to go for this (as long as she gets one, too, for when we play Mario Party).

And they need to not feel like you are sitting on hard plastic. My brother has one of the AK Rockers and the cover on it is simply a cover with no padding. I want to like the chair, but I need some comfort for my ass while I'm gaming.

Alright. I'll bring the car around 11 towards the back, and park it in the very back... You take two chairs and put them in the elevator and send them down, and I will do the rest.

Kinda interesting as my PC is setup halfway between a console style and PC style. I usually end up with the keyboard on my lap and the mouse on the bed and either sitting on a beanbag or on the bed but I need something a bit better for my back. Might give them an e-mail and see what they do about UK shipping.

I bought a Sumo specifically for work to sit on when there's no calls or anything because my desk chair is a piece of shit and was destroying my back.

I've heard the Siesta Sak is pretty good too, looks more akin to the LoveSac than the Sumo/Fatboy: http://www.siestasak.com/

Also for the Sumo foam, can you get the same kind of foam without ordering from Sumo?

So I've got a question for the OP... I read your review of the Lovesac, and it looks great for playing 360 in... but what of the Wii? I find myself shifting around on the couch during long sessions of something like Metroid Prime 3 to constantly keep my arm in a comfortable position. I know that your review is on an Xbox site, but do you have any experience Wiiing it up in the Lovesac?

That's probably the most dirty thing I've ever asked someone in public.

Hmm ... to be perfectly honest my experience with a Wii is limited to playing Wii tennis while piss drunk at a Wii party... and if memory serves that was done standing.

To be perfectly honest I'm not sure if the Wii mote would work well with the LoveSac ...

I could be wrong though ... the LoveSac has huge space to put your arms ... I just don't have enough experience with Wii mote enabled games to say. I can tell you that for games with standard controls with a pad, the LoveSac is divine. big open spaces on each side for your arms.

Hmmm... thanks for the response. Right now the Wii is the only console hooked up in the new place (although I've been thinking of digging out the Dreamcast again thanks to the 9/9/99 thread), but I do also have a computer hooked up to the TV, and this would definitely be more comfortable than the Ikea couch we've got now.

I sent your review to my girlfriend (she's been wanting me to move my gaming chair out of the living room for a while, apparently it offends her) and her conclusion was "You do whatever you want."

I replied, "What if you end up liking it?"

"Then it's my prerogative to change my mind and use it all the time," she said flatly.

    Well then. Happy medium.

I have both a LoveSac and a Sumo, and the LoveSac is great at.. dual usage. The name says it all. By far the greatest piece of "furniture" in the house.

As far as the Sumo is concerned, it was already flat when it was delivered and I don't have the heart to order more beads for it. It should be poofy at least in the beginning, sheesh.

It's interesting you mention that ... I actually called them (Sumo Lounge) when I first got it and complained that my Sumo went flat after a week ... I didn't think they had put enough beads in it. To their credit they were very good and sent me a bag of bead fill which resolved the issue.

I used the Sumo for the past year adding fill periodically to keep it poofy. I found that topping it up every 3 months or so was most ideal, although a big hassle.

The one I reviewed in the article is called the "PlayerSac" and is their second smallest one ... but I was still able to squeeze me and my wife into it for movie watching, and for one person it's still hUge.

I think personally the MovieSac (next size up) or SuperSac (two sizes up) would be most ideal if you plan on sharing it with a loved one. The PlayerSac though is perfect for one.
