So in November I plan on taking a weekend trip to Portland and Eugene. We are driving there. Mostly because I am considering doing grad school in Eugene and I want to check it out, and also because I want to travel a little. So I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to check out, what to avoid, etc. Thanks.

Powell's in Portland is great, if you like books.

Uh, that's the only thing I can think of. The I-5 corridor is boring.

Voodoo Donuts in Portland. Artery-clogging goodness. Their maple bar with bacon is a lot better than it sounds.

Portland is pretty laid back and I've never found too many tourist-magnets there (except perhaps Powell's). Never stopped me from having a good time, though. The food is very good there; there's an excellent Greek restaurant downtown and for tapas fun go forAndina. The Portland Saturday market has kitsch and crafts for sale and is open Saturday and Sunday right off the Max line at Skidmore fountain. The rose gardens are pretty and a good way to kill an hour.

When my girlfriend and I were in Portland we went to a cool little South Seas bar/restaurant which served some of the best food I've ever eaten.

It's called Dragonfish, and apparently it's at the bottom of the Paramount hotel - SW Park Avenue. I'd go back in a second.

Check out the japanese garden or the rose garden if you can. They are pretty cool themselves and also offer nice views of the city.

If you want to be super tourist go ride the hospital tram for $4.

Thanks for your replies. I am going on this trip partly as to be a tourist and partly to see if these are places I would like to live. I have been to Seattle with the same intent. I don't if everyone's answers are going to be different or not, but I thought it might be helpful.
