Speedball 2 is coming to Xbox Live Arcade in October
Previously a game on a number of 'old skool' platforms
you played as Brutal Deluxe in their quest to punch, kick, bite (maybe) and score their way to the top of the league in a futuristic sci-fi sports extravaganza.
The object is to score more points than the opposing team. Sounds easy enough. The challenge, is that they are trying to do the same thing. I suspect they may be Communists. You score points by throwing the ball into their goal (10 points), bouncing it off a circular bounce pad thing (two on the pitch, 2 points a bounce), lighting up a bonus star thing on the side of the pitch (2 points each, a heap of bonus points for completing a set of five), or injuring one of their players (10 points). You can also throw the ball through a multiplier ramp, located on the side of the pitch, which gives you extra points when you achieve the aforementioned goals. Easy.
What this essentially boils down to, is furious button mashing as you try to either
a) throw the ball at something that will result in points for your side, or
b) attempt to stove in the face of an opponent who has the ball.
As multiplayer games go, it was
awesome.
Buy it, or you'll be missing out.

the article in question:
Empire Interactive has told Eurogamer this morning that Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe has been delayed until mid-October.
The Live Arcade title was originally expected in August, but mysteriously disappeared as the release date approached.

Speedball is a sport roughly based around Rugby and American Football, which takes place in the futuristic year of 2105. Two teams of nine players face off against each other, and score points by throwing an Oympic hammer-like ball through a goal at either end - or against some flashing pads on the wall for bonuses.
Other than that, there are next to no rules, so you're free to - and encouraged to - ram your fist into opposing chops, or casually thrust your helmeted head into squishy facial features.
Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe found original success in 1991 on platforms like the Commodore 64, before enjoying numerous subsequent remakes - including a current PC revamp by Kylotonn Entertainment.
The Live Arcade version will add polished-up visuals and leaderboards, and is expected at a price of 800 points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60).

Wikipedia has some interesting things to say about this topic...
edit: but i'll make a more informative OP when i get home from work, complete with pictures.
In any case: ICE CREAM!
seems to be on its way, still, seen a couple of videos of it on gametrailers. Looks pretty much exactly like speedball, and so far, seems to be a pc exclusive.
I like the intro trailers, they really capture the feel of the game. The gameplay footage looked decent as well. I hope that they manage to nail the feel of the game.
I lovvvved Speedball and Brutal Deluxe on the Atari ST... I might just have to break out my Winston copy to play it again right now.
