Wow. Sony has been getting creamed by Apple so long in the portable music department that they finally went insane.
Seriously, buh? I can appreciate the creativity that went into this, but the practical applications of this are absolutely nonexistent. It's too small to be a stationary music player, too big to be a portable music player, it requires a damn flat surface to operate, it's only 1GB and it costs $350? And it dances like an obese penguin?
I've about decided that the Sony execs have some sort of Producers-esque scheme going on where they will make billions if they manage to bankrupt the company.
Edit: Even rich twits with no impulse control wouldn't buy this thing.

Why the crap did I ever make my original name "cloudeagle?"
Posting to join in on the stupidity. Seriously, who is this supposed to appeal to? It's a stupid interface for an MP3 player, and too huge to be convenient. You'd think it was intended as a novelty item, but not at $350.
Did Sony somehow get involved in some kind of 'Brewster's Millions' senario? I'm having a hard time figuring out what other reason they'd have for trying to flush money down the toilet, everyday.
I think you guys are looking at it wrong. IT IS NOT AN MP3 PLAYER LIKE AN IPOD. It's not meant to be jogged with or taken on the subway. It is for your house, to listen to music while reading or working in the kitchen.
You go to a room, lay it down, it pops out speakers and plays. It is streaming music from your PC or using the gig of memory (which is plenty of songs when you really think about it). You tilt it or turn it to change songs, a very simple move.
Assuming the speakers are really good, this isn't horrible. People pay tons for a Bose CD player, and a CD only has like 20 songs.
Now, I ain't saying I would buy one. I just kick off my computer and blast my whole house But in a family environment, having a pair of quality speakers that are aimed at you (so they don't distract others) while you read or cook or sew or whatever...its not horrible. And kinda nifty. Is it stupid to take jogging? Or if you have an Ipod and a speaker dock? Sure. But I don't get the impression they are aiming for that group.

Even as a novelty item, the price is just to high to justify it. You might think you'd want to show it off to your friends, but seriously, if one of my friends bought this and tried to show me it, I'd punch him in the face for wasting 350 dollars on it. I could see it appealling to the younger audience, but I think the market for preteens with high paying jobs is kind of low. Sure, it dances, but is there really going to be a huge appeal for an egg shaped Furby that costs 350 dollars?
If 'in a family environment, having a pair of quality speakers that are aimed at you' is important, I don't think the dancing egg mp3 player is going to offer that, at the very least not as well as the much cheaper combo of a normal MP3 player and a pair of small speakers.
I totally agree, Muffin. You don't have to fry your brain to come up with some more creative puns. These yolkels don't know the first thing about wordplay.
These jokes are cracking me up. I can't wait to see what delicious puns you people hatch next.

You know, just the other day I was thinking how I need an MP3 player than looks like it's having a seizure and then falls off the table and breaks. These fine gentlemen at Sony have made my dream come true.

No, just, no. That can't be the reason they did that, cuz it's stupid. If I'm in my house, then I'm either going to have my mp3 player that I can take with me jogging or on the subway or I can just play music through my computer. This is a 1 gig mp3 player--meaning I can't even put my entire music collection on there. And personal? Get headphones. Put on one headphone instead of both. Problem solved.
This is one of those remarkably stupid things you only see in Brookstones or SkyMall.
No seriously, do it. You think you couldn't laugh more at this thing, but you're wrong.
I like the video, because the song they chose is probably one of the favorite songs of the 10 year old that was apparently running R&D at the time. Is that Kids Bop?
Bill:"I've got a great idea, it's this motion sensitive egg thing, and it dances and plays music, it'll be so awesome! And only $350 bucks, if we don't bother putting quality speakers in it!"
Jim:"That sounds interesting, but who the hell would buy that?"
Bill:"Who cares! They're awesome, just start making them. I'll be in the other room watching Bratz."
Just watched the video. That thing looks so damned retarded when it "dances". And then at the end, when the whole family are sitting backm totally enthralled as they watch some little egg flounder around flapping it's tiny wings, I cracked up.
ignoring the obvious stuff, and recognizing the ACTUAL purpose of this device (it's not an MP3 player; it's a device for wirelessly streaming your music from where ever you store it to anywhere else in the house that just happens to have a gig of internal storage as well) it STILL fails, because it doesn't do video. Why would you buy this, when you could buy something like the new Archos player? It may not dance, but it has a nice ol' screen, and much more internal storage, if you want to use that. Plus, I don't know about Japan, but in the US I believe most consumers are more likely to have a wireless network in their house over having a bluetooth enabled desktop.
I got it, and it was the first thing that came to mind when I read it.
And yes, the .jp swf video is not loading for me either. It plays a few seconds then stops. I waiting for my browser to say it finished loading, but it still did the same thing.
That looks like a video created to poke fun at the Rolly. And not in an intentional "oh look at how charmingly ridiculous our product is, now you want to buy it!," but a Daily Show-esque "dude what the fuck were these people thinking?"
And that video was made by Sony themselves.
.....
I really don't know what to say anymore.

I had the same issue. When I paused it as soon as it started playing, and then waited a bit before unpausing it, I found it would play longer. I never had the patience to wait long enough that it would play the whole way through, though.

Wait, it actually dances?
I thought that was just some thing they made for an ad
If it dances, that's pretty cute
Still not worth the price, but at least it's got something novel going for it

Read the press release: It dances, but you have to program the movements and motions for every song. I'm sure people will do that for you, but it's not like it analyzes the stream and moves accordingly.

I'm not even sure about that. It could just be a big "Guess Who?" fake out.

Why?
It dances...
but turning it, shaking it, and other motions will change it's volume, song, and shuffle settings.
...
This...
Did any of them think of this?
Just not for that price.
You press a button to activate "DISCODISCODISCO" mode, I have a feeling it also turns off the motion features
