Does anyone know what the top selling PC games are in comparison to top selling Video Games? The latest NPD numbers only have console games on it.

You should ask in the video game sales thread.

top selling video game is mario i think with about 20 million.

top selling pc game is sims with maybe 19. about even id say.

video games cumulatively have sold orders of magnitude more overall though.

Consoles do tend to sell more games, despite there being less of a console than there are Windows PC's. Of course many of the triple A PC titles won't run on the Walmart PCs with Intel Integrated graphics, and there are more consoles in front of a comfy couch than there are PCs. IIRC ~80% of Bioshocks sales where for the 360.

    Pretty close on The Sims.

Multiply Super Mario Bros. by FOUR.

The sims doesn't come packaged in every PC. Mario Bros. is better compared with Minesweeper and Solitaire.

No, by two, and that's because it was a pack in, so I don't think you can count it really

And The Sims sold ~16 million

Actually only TWO. It is the highest selling game ever, although it was a bundle.

    Mario sold 20 million.

It came free as a pack in for its other 20 million copies out there.

    Those dont count as sales.

One question I had when I saw this thread is, does anyone know what the trend is when a game is release both on PC and console which sells better? I know this can vary greatly because there are some baaaaad ports out there, but I was wondering if one tends to do better.

Hmmm, I'm surprised, I thought pc games might do better, you know, since they can be played for really long periods of time, unlike the usual one game - one console thing.

Bioshock sold 5 times as many copies on the 360 as on the Pc with simultaneous release and no clear disparity between the two.

If anything, I expect that's a reason for them to do worse in terms of sales.

I know I spend a lot of time with older games that aren't even sold anymore (and it's not as if my PC is incapable of playing newer games either).

Wikipedia says the Sims sold 70 million if you count its 7 expansion packs, which is pretty amazing -- it averages out to each expansion selling almost 8 million on its own, a number which would hold its own on most lists of top-selling games.

NPD lists PC game numbers when they're in the top 20 or whatever, which is extremely rarely. Console games usually outsell PC games by a wide margin, although there are certainly exceptions.

About four times as many, and the PC version was $10 cheaper and supports DX 10.

Counting Super Mario Brothers bundles with the console does not count as a sales for the game (only as a sales for the system bundle). Only individual non-bundled units of the game counts as a sale for the game. (I forgot the correct economics term for this...)

This is why I buy games for my computer, even if my PC can barely run them. Oblivion doesn't work well right now, but when I break out that disc in 10 years I'll be able to play it on my HP Total Reality Virtual Reality Machine running Microsoft VR Basic Home Premium General Consensus Edition.

It's dripping with sarcasm, but only because sarcasm is so delicious: I prefer to buy for PC, because I'll have a PC of some sort in 10 years, while only my Sega Genesis and Dreamcast still run flawlessly (the Nintendo requires ...incentive...the PSOne, while, jiggle the cord and you might get sound). Funnily enough, the original Xbox was first to deteriorate to an unbearable state.

Unfortunately for PC game makers, it's a lot easier for most people to play something now with instant gratification, than having an audience that plays their game on low settings and reaches the consensus 'that it looks like crap' or 'plays like crap' due to the quality of the machine it's running on. Most people don't care about modifying their game content in any way, either.

Plus anyone who didn't play Duck Hunt or Mario at some point better live in a country where there wasn't electicity in the 1980s, or they're a cold steel heartless monster powered by greed and kitten hearts.

My PC can run current games fine. I might have to use 1024x768 for the occasional game, but that's not really all that different from 720p anyway.

The main reason I choose PC games is that they will actually look significantly better in years to come when I play them on a faster PC, or upgrade my current one. I still regularly play games that I bought years ago, and they look and play better on my current PC than they ever did on my older ones.

But perhaps that's part of the reason PC game sales lag behind those of consoles. There are several game series that have each chewed up hundreds of hours of game-time (Doom/Quake, Civilization, Total War, Baldur's Gate/Neverwinter Nights). I've been playing each of these franchises for years, and regularly go back to replay the earlier games in the series. As a result, I have less need to buy new PC games.

Im moving more towards being a console gamer for sure. Mainly because in 10 years the game will run just as well as it does now. Id rather not wait and see to get the most out of it.

Conversely, in 10 years the game will run just as poorly as it does now. High Res textures? nope. Modded content? nope. Poor framerate from pushing the graphics to the limit? N...Actually, yes, you'll still have that.

I'm kind of offended that, in reality, I can't run all the PC games from years back on my modern budget computer. Take Master of Orion; I have a 1.3 gHz Dell desktop, which seems like a much, much bigger number than 66 mHz, which is how many the 486 I used to have was sporting. And never mind the RAM, local bus, hard drive, etc. But the damn turn-based game with 256 colors is running sluggishly, whether I try it in compatibility mode or under DOSBox. What the hell?! A lot of more modern games requiring significantly more horsepower run fine, though.

When I try to run an old game I feel like there ought to be a chart out there with one axis split up into categories like DOS, Win3.x, DOS4GW, Win95, Win98, WinXP 2001-~2003, WinXP 2003-present, telling me whether I can expect to run a game from a given era perfectly, with slowdown, without cutscenes, or not at all under XP. It really doesn't seem like it should be as hard as I've found it to be.

    Quoted for truth.

Now go work on that chart! Countless of games and not enough time!
