Information

Sonic Rush Adventure will be set in an "Ocean-themed world" as he travels to 7 different islands, each containing its own level. Sonic will use ships, submarines, and other vessels created by Tails to travel along the sea to defeat the pirates.

The main villain appears to be Captain Whisker, a pirate who bears a striking resemblance to Dr. Eggman, the main antagonist of the Sonic series. Captain Whisker appears to be either a robot or dressed in a mechanical suit, and is adorned with an insignia and a large mustache, both resembling Eggman's.
The game will have multiplayer compatible with DS Download Play, with either racing or "mission-based battles".
Sonic the Hedgehog and Blaze the Cat return as playable characters as in Sonic Rush. The game also introduces a new female, tan raccoon character named Marine the Raccoon. Although Tails is mentioned, an article in Nintendo Power, vol.218, confirms that he is not playable; Marine may also be just a supporting character, thus not playable although this is unconfirmed. There are special vehicles used to travel between islands (as seen in some of the screenshots) and players may find pieces for these vehicles and give them to Tails to build and modify.

Players can compete with each other over local wireless or Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, racing through any of the game's levels in order to either finish the fastest or obtain the most rings. There is also a leaderboard feature which allows uploading one's personal time trial scores to be viewed on the game's official web site.

Stages

Southern Island: Like Sonic Adventure, Sonic Rush adventure features a Adventure field called southern island, where the player can explore different parts of the island, such as Marines house, and the various structures containing one of the four ships used throughout the game, this is also the only area where one can save the game, play a stage or explore the world map.

After choosing a ship, the player will have a choice to plan the route to the other islands, much like the gameplay in Star Fox Command. After drawing the desired route, the player will engage in a fixed rail type game across the sea in the desired ship, following the drawn path, it is possible that the player will find Johnny and would end up racing him for one of the Chaos Emeralds, certain ships are limited to what type of water they can traverse (such as the Submarine not being able to cross any where with lots of land) as marked by the red shading.

There are many small islands, called Hidden Islands, that when found would either contribute only to the storyline, or hold just one Act for extra material.

Many of these stage names were taken from the tracklist on the Original Soundtrack.

Plant Kingdom: A jungle abundant in mushrooms and dinosaur robots. The stage features vines and the mushrooms are bouncy, possibly a throw-back to Sonic & Knuckles. Boss is a giant robotic Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Machine Labyrinth: A large complex maze of steam-powered machines, this level has a distinct victorian feel to it. The boss is a large robot that must be defeated using swinging balls that hang from cranes.

Coral Cave: A water themed level filled with coral and gemstones. Boss is a giant robotic octopus.

Haunted Ship: An area of sea filled with haunted shipwrecks, some of which will spring to life attack Sonic with cannons from a distance. The boss is a green pirate robot with a detachable stomach which is also its weakpoint.

Blizzard Peaks: An island with a large icy mountain on it. When Sonic first arrives he makes use of a snowboard to navigate the level, and must escape from an avalanche, like in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic Adventure.

Sky Babylon: Surreal floating ruins filled odd devices and architecture, and fire that Blaze can control. The boss is green robot on the top screen with two floating platform hands that the player must fight while chasing it with the perspective set behind Sonic.

Pirates Island: Capitan Whisker's hideout - an ancient set of ruins filled with water, turned into a makeshift pirate town where Sonic can ride dolphins and grind on water. The boss is a duel fight between the player and both Captain Whisker and Johnny

Big Swell: A large industrial platform on the outskirts of Pirates Island, this is where the initial final boss is fought.

Deep Core: This secret level holds the extra final boss.

I'm excited. Sonic Rush is still one of my favorite games for the DS and pretty much the reason I bought a DS in the first place. Woo.

I've already played and beaten this game. It's an improvement over the first Sonic Rush in terms of level design. Levels feel a lot less like they're hovering platforms over a void. You can shoot off a ramp into abyss without worrying that you'll die - you'll almost always find ground to land on.

The music seems like an imitation of Sonic Rush's music. Less inspired.

I've been sick all day and I can't really articulate myself very well, so I'll talk more about it later.

I will say that the final boss theme is probably one of my favorite songs in the sonic series thus far. It sounds kinda like a remix of "Wrapped in Black" from sonic rush.

And the Hidden Islands are pretty cool.

Urgh. I didn't particularly like Sonic Rush's soundtrack (call me a heathen all you want, but the carnival level's music in particular grated on my nerves), so this doesn't exactly make me too thrilled. However, the "fewer bottomless pits" part is good news. Hmm. The soundtrack isn't a deal breaker, though; I just picked up SatSR and am loving the hell out of it, despite it having one of the worst soundtracks I've ever heard in a game. It's so bad it's almost awesome.

And in case anyone is worried about the "adventure" part of the title - yes there are adventure fields. But the good news is that they're very small, and they're actually quite fun. The graphics engine Sega uses for SRA is really advanced.

The water portions of the game are also a lot of fun.

Sonic Rush Adventure feels a lot like what I imagine Phantom Hour glass to feel like. It's sort of a mix between Sonic and very, very loose elements of wind waker. There's a lot more exploring - you obviously can go to the main levels (each it's own individual island) but you can also just explore the ocean. Doing so will net you additional, hidden levels. THe entire game feels a lot more connected. And, since I remember people complaining about the prospect of sailing being in the game, I'll say that using the water bike is really fun.

You start by drawing a course on the map, and then it goes into a behind-your-back perspective. You control the bike just like you controlled sonic in Rush's special stages. WHen you touch the stylus to the screen, you begin to accelerate. You can see a meter telling you how far you are in your course on the top screen. These water bike segments can be really long if you draw long paths on the map for you to travel along. But they do feel like sonic levels. They feel like sonic 2's special stages.

Don't think so. DIMPS made the first Sonic Rush, you know.

Not that that's a bad thing. Didn't Sonic Team make Sonic 360 or whatever? Whereas DIMPS made the Sonic Advance games, which weren't all that bad.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Sega and Dimps fell out and this is the first 2d Sonic to be made internally by Sega since... Knuckles Chaotix? Sonic Pocket Adventure maybe?

It sounds like this fixes all the major flaws with Rush, so it should be awesome, I mean Rush was a pretty fun game to begin with. Thing is, Rush is a fundamentally different game to the old Sonics and I can't help wishing we were getting a proper Sonic the Hedgehog 4 instead (even if not by name). The closest we've come was Sonic Advance 1, which wasn't bad but it felt kinda' lazy and uninspired.

While they're still using the engine that DIMPS developed for Sonic Rush 1, SEGA Studios USA - AKA Sonic Team USA, who made Sonic 360, Heroes and Shadow - made Rush Adventure. I'll start by saying that by no means should you let that scare you off.

I haven't gotten very far in my copy yet, but from what I've experienced, it's a pretty big improvement. The level design, as TSR already stated, is considerably better and more thought-out, with original, fun design gimmicks for each level and an almost startling lack of bottomless pits; the levels are almost reminiscent of Sonic 2's in a way, though obviously far larger in scope to accommodate the boost in speed. As for the "Adventure" portion of the game? It's really nothing more than a 3D level select screen with (entirely skippable) cutscenes here and there, and the bonus stages are much more fun than they really have any right to be. The online multiplayer is almost shockingly lag-free, or at least the two matches I've played have been - little slowdown and everything runs very smoothly aside from the occasional hiccup. The online rankings work well and should provide a little friendly speedrun competition, which never hurts.

Also, Sonic and pirates, in the same game? Fuck yes, I will take some of that, sir.

Been playing this since Friday, it's fantastic! It's by far my favourite DS game. The best thing about it is that it isn't riddled with Sonic cliches like the Advance games were (and Rush, to an extent). Everything in it feels really bold and new, with tonnes of set-pieces and events that you've never seen in a Sonic game before. The bosses are all genius, and the free-form structure of it works really well.

'No more good Sonic games' my fucking arse. ;)

This game is built on Rush's engine. The original Sonic games weren't really about speed per se, they were about the physics and managing your momentum. Rush's engine doesn't really have proper physics in place and instead of managing your momentum, you're managing your boost bar. I can see how they could appear similar but it really is a fundamental difference.

EDIT: I will accept that this seems like the next best thing to a proper Sonic 4 though. Also, Marine, as far as I'm aware, isn't playable. Does that actually make her worse?

I haven't played the game yet, I'm waiting for my copy to get here. My point was that if people complain about extraneous characters when they are playable and thus provide some sort of gameplay, doesn't it make it worse if they're just sort of... there, serving no real purpose at all.

OK, got this today. Level design is indeed top notch and I'm yet to see any real unfun gameplay but having to deal with maps and things between zones really breaks up the flow of the game.

Oh and I like Marine (as far as modern Sonic characters go anyway), if there's any justice in the games industry then Sonic will go back to starring in proper Sonic games, Blaze will inherit Rush and Marine will be her Tails.

Remember the MD Sonic games and how the levels all felt like places in Sonic's bizzare, surreal world rather than just obstacle courses with arbitrary graphical themes like more recent games? That feeling is back. We may not be talking Sonic 4 here but, dammit, this is a great game and people should be playing it.
