How is vacuum tech nowadays? Does it suck?

My mom has had a Kirby vacuum cleaner for.. well, what seems like forever. It looks like something straight out of the 1950s (though it's more like 10 years old). To be frank, it's terrible. The suction has pretty much died off entirely, it's overly heavy and cumbersome, and it's just a chore to use.
Problem is my mom paid some 'large' amount of money for it and to her apparently the logic is -
Large Price Tag = Will work for the rest of your life
So, anyhow I'm looking to replace it (even if she won't). I don't want anything fancy. At most I just want a 'normal' vacuum with a single attachment for smaller areas. Something that doesn't weight 30lbs would be a plus as well as lack of need for a bag.
Would going to Wal*Mart be an ok choice? I don't want to pay a lot of money for a new one.
All Dyson's I've seen will work for at least a decade, so I would factor that into your cost analysis when you think about having to buy bags and how many replacement cleaners you will get in that time.

Erm, when I said "cheap" I meant under 100 dollars. Even the cheapest Dyson is 400 fucking dollars.
That's why too much money for something that just sucks in dirt.
Are you sure that your vacuum is actually dead? A lot of times its clogged somewhere or a filter needs to be replaced which is simplistic if you can find it and then they work like new.

Even when it was new, it sucked. It's also too heavy to be used in a 2 floor house. I'd like to get a cheap, perhaps small replacement for my room.
I seriously doubt you're going to be able to find a bagless vacuum that doesn't weigh anything for under $100 that isn't a piece of shit. Being bagless and being light are both features that will cost you extra, so to get those you'll need to venture well beyond your unusually small vacuum budget.
The cheapest vacuum I could find that I would recommend would be a Hoover WindTunnel Supreme, which is the vacuum I'm currently using. It's fairly heavy (around 45lbs) and does use bags, but it is a very sturdy, well made piece of machinery that will serve you well. It comes with all the fancy attachment for corners and doing couches/stairs/etc. Note: Anyone who is not very strong should not consider attempting to do stairs with the main vacuum assembly. Use the small carpet-cleaning head with the extending hose and leave the main piece of hardware firmly rooted to the ground.
If you want a cheap, small replacement for a small space there's options. I'm currently using a $35 Eureka that is extremely light and small. The compartment fills up quick, but I only have 2 rooms to vacuum so it's not a big deal.
I don't know how long it will last or anything like that, but it's cordless and painless to use. Cheap. And it picks up all my random dirt and cracker crumbs.
Consider that if you're not doing any heavy duty cleaning.
I got a Hoover Windtunnel bagless model for $100-$150 within the last year that I'm very happy with. It works better than the Eureka bagless vacuum I used previously and paid more like $250 for years ago.
I've got a hoover hero for au$99, which is like US$70 or so. Its a good machine, only little but plenty of suck. And hoover are one of the easiest companies to get replacement bits and pieces for, so you won't have to tramp miles to get new bags.
They usually come with a couple of bags to get you started too, which for a couple of rooms will last you for freakin' ever.
I know you say it's too expensive, but I'm going to second the Dyson. I seriously can't see ours breaking ever. It works great. It's easy to clean and take apart, so it getting clogged isn't a problem. And I've never seen a vacuum get such good suction. Easily worth the $400 we payed for it (considering the one it replaced was only 3 years old and cost us $100. Piece of crap hoover)

No I don't.

Makes me wish I had a way to pay for one in installments.
Ah well, I'll go to Wal*Mart and see what I can see.. hopefully I'll find something.
This is the greatest vacuum I have ever owned.Hoover Fusion that you can only buy at walmart. It works on the same principles that the dysons work on, but it's only 99 dollars, If you search online you can find tons of positive reviews for it.

ROFL. That looks like a total rip of the Dyson. Hilarious.
I used to have a friend who was a housekeeper, and she had tried a whole lot of vacuums over the years. Her opinion was that they all suck (HAH!) and she just bought a cheap one every few months and threw it away when it stopped working well.

It is perhaps the best piece of tech we have, besides our Macs.
