Book 3: Fire

Avatar? Isn't that some show on Nick?

Avatar is, in my opinion, easily the best narrative made specifically for TV. The show employs a lot of literary techniques, such as parallel character arcs, symbolism, and lots of foreshadowing. The show was pretty much entirely planned out since before it first aired, which I think contributes a lot to its strength. For example, it isn't prey to a new writer coming in and just deciding to bring back a dead character or whatever. Character deaths and development really mean something. This, combined with the Eastern spirituality and artstyle and awesome action scenes based on real martial arts, make it a very compelling viewing, and unlike anything that's come out of Nick, or really, pretty much all television. Think something as epic as LotR, but Asian inspired.

Okay, so what's it about?

Picture an Eastern inspired world. There are four nations, each with their own unique culture. The Air Nomads were all monks. They lived in mountainous temples, detached from society. The two Water Tribes live at the poles. They draw a lot from the Inuit. The Earth Kingdom is a massive continent, complete with a series of great walls to give you the China reference. The Fire Nation is mostly imperial Japan, but its volcanic islands are tropical and probably more similar to Hawaii.

Each nation has its own martial art, which combines with a spiritual aspect to grant the ability to control the elements. It's not like typical magic, there are no spells or anything. Rather, the element is like an extension of one's limbs. The four bending disciplines are all based on real Kung Fu styles, too. Airbending is Ba Gua, which focuses on evasion and disabling the opponent, as well as being on the ground as little as possible. Waterbending is Tai Chi, which deals with fluid gestures. Earthbending is typically Hung Gar, it involves very decisive movements, and is the one discipline to have an equal amount of defense and offense. Toph and her pupil Aang use Southern Praying Mantis style for earthbending, both in the show and in real life it was invented by a blind woman. Firebending is Northern Shaolin style, which is very much concerned with offense and flair.

In each nation, there is a certain percentage of people who are benders. The airbenders, for example, had the smallest population, and were the most spiritual, so they were all benders. There is one individual who is continually reincarnated into each nation, and that is the Avatar. He is the only one who can bend all four elements. The last Avatar, Avatar Roku of the Fire Nation, died mysteriously. Twelve years later Firelord Sozin and his armies used the power of a passing comet to boost their strength and begin his war on the other nations, beginning with the genocide of the Air Nomads. The war has lasted one hundred years, and the Fire Nation has very nearly won. But the Avatar, the very last airbender, was found in an iceberg by two Water Tribe children.

Book 1: Water took place in winter and dealt with Aang's journey to the north pole, in order to find a waterbending master. Along the way Aang learned of his mission: defeat Firelord Ozai by the end of the summer, or the Fire Nation will use the power of Sozin's Comet once again and not even the Avatar will be able to set thing right.

Book 2: Earth took place in spring and dealt with Aang's search for an earthbending teacher, the capture of Appa, and the journey to the Earth capital of Ba Sing Se. Along the way they learned of the upcoming solar eclipse. Since firebenders draw their power from the sun, the eclipse would halt their bending and provide for an invasion. In the end, the Earth Kingdom fell to the Fire Nation at last, and Aang was killed. He was revived, but is still wounded.

Book 3: Fire will occur during the summer, and is the final act in the story of Aang and Zuko. Aang must master firebending and prepare for the coming invasion on the Day of Black Sun. All the while, the comet approaches.

The Leads

Avatar Aang, 112 is the most recent incarnation of the Avatar. The last of his people, Aang is often able to keep a positive demeanor, despite the hefty responsibility thrust on him and the loss of his people. Being the Avatar, he is naturally gifted at bending (having done it a thousand times) and mastered airbending at an early age, as evidenced by his tattoos.

Prince Zuko, 16 is the banished son of the current Firelord. He was given a scar by his father for refusing to fight him three years ago. Nevertheless, Zuko will do anything to please his father. In Book 1 this involved hunting the thought-gone-forever Avatar. In Book 2, he was made a fugitive of his own country, but his recent actions at Ba Sing Se have led to his reinstatement. Zuko is an okay firebender, but his real skill is in double broadswords.

Aang's Gang

Katara, 14 is a waterbender from the decimated Southern Water Tribe. Her mother was killed in a Fire Nation raid when she was young. She was especially determined with waterbending and excelled to the point of becoming Aang's teacher. She is Aang's love interest.

Sokka, 15 is Katara's brother. The leader of the group, Sokka is a brilliant strategist and has a scientific mind. He can't bend, but uses a variety of weapons. Mostly known for his boomerang, Sokka will be trained to use a sword this season.

Toph Bei Fong, 12 is Aang's earthbending teacher. A self-taught prodigy, Toph was born blind and uses earthbending to feel the vibrations in the ground and "see." She was born to one of the richest families in the world, but ran away from them. She recently discovered metalbending, which was deemed impossible. She has a bit of a crush on Sokka.

Appa is the last Sky Bison, and the only other individual to have been frozen with Aang. He can airbend to carry the heroes around the world.

Momo is a flying lemur, and a sort of pet of the gang.

Zuko's Crew

Princess Azula, 14 is Zuko's younger sister. A firebending prodigy and perfectionist, Azula is responsible for conquering the Earth Kingdom. Her signature move is the finishing move of generating lightning.

Mai, 15 is Azula's friend and Zuko's girlfriend. She is typically very Gothlike, very depressed. Her fighting style involves throwing blades.

Ty Lee, 14 is another friend of Azula's. She has a very cheery attitude, and a, uh, pretty nice body for a cartoon. She is an acrobat who employs chi-blocking techniques by hitting pressure points, thus disabling limbs and bending. She has a crush on Sokka.

Other Characters

General Iroh is the Firelord's brother. He was supposed to succeed his father, but after his son died in battle, Iroh went on a spiritual journey and let his younger brother rule. In his son's absence, Iroh became very close to Zuko. He has been Zuko's companion up until this point, but is now imprisoned for helping the Avatar. This has caused a major rift between him and his nephew.

Chief Hakoda is Sokka and Katara's father, and the leader of the Southern Water Tribe fleet.

Firelord Ozai is the current Firelord. He assumed the throne under suspicious circumstances.

Ursa is Zuko and Azula's mother. Zuko was especially close to her, but she disappeared the night Firelord Azulon died.

Firelord Sozin is Zuko's great-grandfather. He started this war. He was a contemporary of Roku's.

Avatar Roku was the Avatar before Aang. He was from the Fire Nation.

Princess Yue, 16 was from the Northern Water Tribe and was in love with Sokka. She sacrificed her life to become the moon spirit.

Suki is the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors, who derive their fighting style from a previous Avatar. She and her warriors were defeated by Azula, and her fate is unknown. She is a love interest of Sokka's.

The Earth King is the ruler of the now-lost Earth Kingdom. For years he was kept oblivious to the war by his trusted advisor, Long Feng. The heroes rescued him from the coup at the end of Book 2, and he and his pet bear Bosco will be going on a spiritual journey around the world.

King Bumi is the ruler of the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu. A friend of Aang's from before the war, Bumi is a skilled earthbender probably crazy or something and favors approaching problems from a unique angle. He is currently imprisoned in New Ozai (the former Omashu), "waiting for the right moment to strike."

Many past characters will be returning, including Teo of the Northern Air Temple colony.

Want more Avatar?

Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the show's co-creators, will be teaming up with M. Night Shyamalan to produce three movies based on the three books of Avatar. An interview with the three is included in the Book 2 boxset, and explains how Night got involved.

Though this is the end of the story, Mike and Bryan have stated that they plan on doing more stories from this universe. What this means, whether it is a second series, comics, or what have you is unknown.

Here is the first part of a rather interesting interview from AvatarSpirit.Net: http://www.avatarspiritmedia.net/interviews.php?id=18

The insanely epic Book III trailer released at Comic Con this year has been released for download at several places, including http://www.miraelizabeth.com/season3trailercomp.mov. It has been requested that the trailer not be put on YouTube and similar sites. Just download it, it's better quality anyway.

Remember people, the premier is Friday, September 21st at 8:30 PM! Get excited!

Spoilers-- everything through Comic Con 2007 ought to be free game. Stuff that has been leaked since then, I dunno. We can decide that together, I guess. I guess spoiler new episodes as they air.

    Yeah.

That's a bummer, what with there being 4 elements. Oh well, at least they're finally airing the season.

Yes, it was planned from the beginning to have this be the full story.

They have said a few times that they "aren't done with this universe yet" and that they are interested in "telling more stories."

Plus there are the movies, but those will be straight up adaptations of the three books.

Eh. I've got the AvatarSpirit.Net forums open right now. The fandom is not very intelligent. We argue about this a lot, despite Mike and Bryan saying a few times that the airbenders are gone.

Actually, no! It was going to be, but Nick renewed it for three more seasons. The creators approved it, too, so it's (hopefully) not just going to turn into pointless Inuyasha-style meandering without anything significant ever happening.

What I'm thinking is that the other three seasons will be titled after some of the chakras, so we can do Sound, Light, and Thought (assuming they skip Air in either list).

Source this. I'm entirely sure it's false.

I mean, there was a Pokemon magazine interview that claimed that there were three more seasons, but they were just fishing for answers. It goes against what they've said several times.

I've been thinking about this ever since the Animorphs phalla. It would be the best thing ever.

I'd suggest waiting till this book's over though. Just so you have the complete canon to base it on.
