It is with great sadness that I tell you that the Dragon is gone. RJ left us today at 2:45 PM. He fought a valiant fight against this most horrid disease. In the end, he left peacefully and in no pain. In the years he had fought this, he taught me much about living and about facing death. He never waivered in his faith, nor questioned our God’s timing. I could not possibly be more proud of anyone. I am eternally grateful for the time that I had with him on this earth and look forward to our reunion, though as I told him this afternoon, not yet. I love you bubba.
Our beloved Harriet was at his side through the entire fight and to the end. The last words from his mouth were to tell her that he loved her.
Thank each and everyone of you for your prayers and support through this ordeal. He knew you were there. Harriet reminded him today that she was very proud of the many lives he had touched through his work. We’ve all felt the love that you’ve been sending my brother/cousin. Please keep it coming as our Harriet could use the support.
Jason will be posting funeral arrangements.
My sincerest thanks.
Peace and Light be with each of you,
Wilson

His passing came before he finished the last book in a twelve book series, The Wheel of Time. He has supposedly given the major plotpoints to family members before his passing, so his vision is known for how the series ended.
Aside from the obvious sadness and condolences that come with a man's passing, what is the tasteful way to end a story such as the one he as written? Do you hire a Ghost Writer to finish the book with the skeleton provided by family and friends? Does the family simply let people know how it all turns out? Do you just leave it where it is? An unfinished work... another Canterbury Tales?
Tolkien had his son continue the world of Arda for decades past his passing, but to me, most of the material he released never felt quite right; it lacked the polish the original muse put into his finished works. I am glad to have the info, but I feel that all I got was pale shadows compared to what J.R.R. could have delivered if he lived but a mere 10-20 years longer.
I have been chewing over how the best way to handle this would be, and I honestly cannot think of a way that would satiate the fans of his work and do justice to the years of life he put into this literature.

This is pretty much how I feel, even though his writing gradually went downhill I'd still like to see the end of the story.
Damn shame.
As far as I know, the plan was for his wife (and editor) to finish the book from his notes if he died.
Maybe she's a better writer than editor, who knows
I'm pretty sure he just forgot that happened at all until like half a book later
I never did like his books past the first two, and stopped at about the fifth, when I realized that the series wasn't going anywhere.
Edit: From the responses here, it looks like it still hasn't gone anywhere.
It was Graendal. Where have you been?
The fuck?
(If someone is offended by my irreverent attitude towards a recently dead person, I'd like to say that I am kind of joking.)
Process of elimination made it pretty clear it had to be her.
Also, he said it was her, like 7 years ago

If George Martin goes belly-up, Jordan-style, before finishing his series, somebody's gonna have to pay.
Also, I was going to type what Plutonium wrote. GRRM needs to stop eating cheeseburgers, he doesn't look healthy.
Well damn. Thanks for the link.
No kidding. That series will end, come hell or high water.
I'd post one of his pictures, but it would only be too depressing.
haha, I guess it is still possible to fuck things up further
I would laugh so long and hard.
Aww, for a moment, I thought he was dying too.
Someone want to explain to me what the deal is with all the opinions like this?
I never read any of the books or even heard of the guy, just curious.
edit: specifically with the "wow this is so ironic" bit.
The first 3 were pretty damn good. People are dying to see how it ends.
Then things started to drag.
and draaaaaaag
and draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggg
Now there are 11 books out and everyone was waiting for the 12th and finally last book to just finish with the shit and never touch the things again
and he up and dies before it is finished
Anyways, it was supposed to be a trilogy or whatever, but he just kept writing and writing, to the point where he was obviously delaying any plot progression so he could keep cranking out the story in the same setting and with the same characters, to obviously rake in the cash. I've stopped counting, but there's probably at least ten or fifteen novels by now, and among them there probably were are few where absolutely nothing happened.
We didn't mean it, though. Didn't know about him getting sick. Stopped joking when we found out he was ill, because something about it felt like a bad omen.
I haven't even started book nine yet, but I'm going to. I hope they finish the series somehow.
So I'll just continue living my life without reading his books or generally caring about him.
Cool.
The more thieves and robbers there will be.

I don't really see writing a series you don't like very much to be a good reason to contract a painful and fatal disease.
I thought his therapy was going well?
Fucking hell man, this is awful.
I just hope GRRM isn't next. If GRRM dies before he finishes his series, I will cry my fucking head off.
I liked the first three books, but I think that he was a dick for jerking around the people who liked his stuff. I wouldn't wish it upon anybody, but it certainly is an ironic way to go.
brevity is the soul of wit
only fitting, since his one series is roughly the size of all of my shakespeare collection.

That seems like a fairly spirited reaction from someone who isn't even a fan. I hope you didn't read the thread title in a public place.
People die. Just because they wrote a bunch of books of debatable quality doesn't make their passing particularly sad or significant in the grand scheme of things.
"Perrin fucks his wife. Rand dies. Mat accumulates every single coin in the known world. Nynaeve tugs her braid because damn if she does anything else. etc"
You screamed OH MY GOD aloud, because Robert Jordan died? And you're not even a fan? Fuck, I hope you don't read the obituaries or you'll blow your vocal cords.
I think the point is that he died before completing his masterpiece, which is a sad way to go. Sure, it was of debatable quality, but is was his life's work none the less.
Anyways, I hope his fans get some closing out of this.
