Robert Jordan is Dead, and the Future of Wheel of Time

It is with great sadness that I tell you that the Dragon is gone. RJ left us today at 2:45 PM. He fought a valiant fight against this most horrid disease. In the end, he left peacefully and in no pain. In the years he had fought this, he taught me much about living and about facing death. He never waivered in his faith, nor questioned our God’s timing. I could not possibly be more proud of anyone. I am eternally grateful for the time that I had with him on this earth and look forward to our reunion, though as I told him this afternoon, not yet. I love you bubba.
Our beloved Harriet was at his side through the entire fight and to the end. The last words from his mouth were to tell her that he loved her.
Thank each and everyone of you for your prayers and support through this ordeal. He knew you were there. Harriet reminded him today that she was very proud of the many lives he had touched through his work. We’ve all felt the love that you’ve been sending my brother/cousin. Please keep it coming as our Harriet could use the support.
Jason will be posting funeral arrangements.
My sincerest thanks.
Peace and Light be with each of you,
Wilson

His passing came before he finished the last book in a twelve book series, The Wheel of Time. He has supposedly given the major plotpoints to family members before his passing, so his vision is known for how the series ended.

Aside from the obvious sadness and condolences that come with a man's passing, what is the tasteful way to end a story such as the one he as written? Do you hire a Ghost Writer to finish the book with the skeleton provided by family and friends? Does the family simply let people know how it all turns out? Do you just leave it where it is? An unfinished work... another Canterbury Tales?

Tolkien had his son continue the world of Arda for decades past his passing, but to me, most of the material he released never felt quite right; it lacked the polish the original muse put into his finished works. I am glad to have the info, but I feel that all I got was pale shadows compared to what J.R.R. could have delivered if he lived but a mere 10-20 years longer.

I have been chewing over how the best way to handle this would be, and I honestly cannot think of a way that would satiate the fans of his work and do justice to the years of life he put into this literature.

I think it depends on how much of the final book he got drafted before his illness took over. If it's better than half done, I think a good ghost writer who's given the skeleton of the story should be able to keep with his style, given he's done 11 other books in the series it shouldn't be terribly difficult.

Didn't he nominate an author to take over for him? And then someone told me that guy kicked off first...

As much as his death saddens me, I don't particularly care what they do as long as the ending is released. I want to know how it ends but have no interest in actually reading the book. Then again, if they release it, I probably will pick it up and the other 2-3 I don't have.

This is pretty much how I feel, even though his writing gradually went downhill I'd still like to see the end of the story.

As far as I know, the plan was for his wife (and editor) to finish the book from his notes if he died.

Maybe she's a better writer than editor, who knows

I demand that he rises from the grave to finish the damn series. This is like adding insult to injury. First we get book after book of bickering and braid-tugging, the story is never advanced at all, and then the author dies. Shame on you, RJ!

(If someone is offended by my irreverent attitude towards a recently dead person, I'd like to say that I am kind of joking.)
    And he deserves it.

Process of elimination made it pretty clear it had to be her.

Also, he said it was her, like 7 years ago

Anyways, let me be the first (of hopefully many) to derail this topic.

If George Martin goes belly-up, Jordan-style, before finishing his series, somebody's gonna have to pay.

So he writes this fantasy series.

The first 3 were pretty damn good. People are dying to see how it ends.

    Then things started to drag.

    and draaaaaaag

    and draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggg

Now there are 11 books out and everyone was waiting for the 12th and finally last book to just finish with the shit and never touch the things again

and he up and dies before it is finished

Jordan started writing a series many, many years ago called the "Wheel of Time" (WoT) Decent fantasy, sort of derivative, but what the heck.

Anyways, it was supposed to be a trilogy or whatever, but he just kept writing and writing, to the point where he was obviously delaying any plot progression so he could keep cranking out the story in the same setting and with the same characters, to obviously rake in the cash. I've stopped counting, but there's probably at least ten or fifteen novels by now, and among them there probably were are few where absolutely nothing happened.

Me and my dad used to joke - a lot - that Jordan would die before finishing the series, because it had gotten so long and bloated.

We didn't mean it, though. Didn't know about him getting sick. Stopped joking when we found out he was ill, because something about it felt like a bad omen.

I haven't even started book nine yet, but I'm going to. I hope they finish the series somehow.

I think the point is that he died before completing his masterpiece, which is a sad way to go. Sure, it was of debatable quality, but is was his life's work none the less.

Anyways, I hope his fans get some closing out of this.
