Lair Dev Slams SIXAXIS Controls in Warhawk

Title says it all. Too Funny
"Warhawk's controls are... eurgh!," Eggebrecht told us with a shudder. He explained that while motion-sensing felt the perfect way to convey the feeling of controlling a dragon in Lair, he believed the kinetic technology in PS3's Sixaxis controllers shouldn't be used just because it's there. "I see motion-sensing as a complimentary, additional new step in terms of controls and where it fits you should use it and where it doesn't fit, don't force it. Please don't force it."

Dragon dev doesn't like PS3 shooter's use of motion-sensing

The article makes the perfect point with: "We certainly weren't won over by Warhawk's motion controls, but at least they were only optional"

Making a stupid control scheme optional = Warhawk FTW.

My co-op Rogue Leader disc had a single player mode?

To be fair, the ship stuff was still solid, and the walker stuff was OK, but Rogue Leader is still beautiful to this day and it was a launch title on the cube.

Funny thing, this complaint, considering Warhawk gives you the option to turn off the motion sensitive controls and use the standard analog ones.

Giving the players the choice on what they want to use, crazy idea isn't it Factor 5?

I quite agree. It wasn't that I didn't like the game, though. It was because I sucked at it and losing a LOT gets old really fast. :<

Julian really needs to stop talking to the press for a while. The damage is done man, just stop. This is verging on Dyack territory here. Nothing you can say or do will improve Lair at this point, and bashing on the competition (the vastly superior competition, I fucking love warhawk) is doing more harm than good.

The PS3's Sixaxis motion sensor is a complete and total failure. I suggest they create a PS3-mote controller that is dedicated for motion sensor play, because the Sixaxis is NOT conducive to motion sensor gameplay AT ALL!!!

How the hell is the PS3 controller bad for motion sensor play in and of itself? I've been using it in Warhawk, Lair, and in the Motorstorm demo, and I rather like it. Sure, I would not want to aim a gun with it like you might with the wiimote, but for driving things it feels rather natural and intuitive, so I like it.

The man's name is Dennis Dyack, he had 2 choices marvel super villian or video game maker.

    He chose incorrectly.

Also I find it highly hilarious that I got into an argument about this on another board a few days ago and used Warhawk as an example of how to implement sixaxis control.

Lack of a sense of social awareness, maybe. The man still makes great game(s) and doesn't talk bad about other developers, but I don't think he's actually aware of the way that his statements tend to be received by the gaming public at large.

    As for this, uh...

The only comparison I could make would be if Sony mocked Nintendo for including motion controls. Did that ever happen?

Well the 2k6 press conference started with them saying they weren't about gimmicks then they revealed the sixaxis and using the PSP as a rear view mirror. Does that count?

I think so. That press conference was epic. I'm sure someone mentioned in passing that they were programming Warhawk while it was being demo'd at the conference.

It was more a case of we'd just finished seeing the Nintendo one, then they turned around and said "No Gimmicks! $599 US Dollars" and it just sort of exploded. When you weren't refreshing to get past the poasts and poasts of Ridge Racer quotes.

    Drez wrote: »

Look, its not totally lost. As long as Sony are willing to stop being dicks and eat some humble pie, theres progress that can be made. The problem is that $600 is an outrageous price for a video game console.

I don't care how much tech you have to cut out, you keep the fucking price under $400 and even thats pushing it. If they'd not been so busy trying to push their own format again and just made a console for $300-400, full backwards compatibility via the EE chip and left off of BR in favour of something like HD-DVD then they'd have their own money printing machine.

Look at the momentum they built up at the end of the last generation of consoles. Hell, look at the momentum the PS2 still has. And they managed to somehow fuck up enough they lost most to almost all of it.

Back on topic. Its pretty fucking crass of Eggebrecht to try pulling this shit off.
