PS3 backwards compatability question:

So I'm getting a PS3 this fall. The loss of the EE chip in the 80 gig model has spurred this decision to buy, but I want to clarify something.

My biggest concern with the backwards compatability is upscaling. Pure number of titles that are BC doesn't matter so much since I already have a PS2, and if the EE-enabled PS3 can't pull off upscaling, then I'd prefer to just wait for a price drop on the 80 gig (or the rumored $400 30 gig).

So what's the situation on the BC?

All PS3's do upscaling, if that's what you're asking.

Pretty much. I was under the impression the EE PS3's played PS2 exactly like a PS2 with no enhancements or anything.

No the EE PS3's just use hardware backwards compatibility instead of software. They definitely upscale just fine, I have a 60gb and it upscales just fine. If that answers your question.

My limited exposure to PS3's upscaling has been... disappointing. Ratchet&Clank 1-3 all upscaled beautifully in in-engine cutscenes, but ran at PS2 resolutions and at 20fps in the actual game. Likewise Klonoa2. It's like someone made a list of my favourite games and ticked "add shit support" next to them. :(

There's an option you have to turn on for it though... and it's either off, on or full screen. There's also smoothing which if I remember correctly did jack all for the PS1 games on the PS2.

Both of those were on. As said, the upscaling worked in the cutscene segments, and I saw it work in a couple of other games.

Well, I wasn't specificly replying to you, but I have heard other comments from other people about some games not upscaling proper. Your system is an NTSC 60gb version, correct?

Friend's UK version. No idea what type, bought a few months ago.

See, the UK doesn't have the Emotion Engine which is PS2 hardware. UK PS3 use software emulation. There's your problem.

I was under the impression that all upscaling was emulation, and the EE was just used for "play PS2 games in PS2 quality"?

Hmmm.... I'll let someone more tech inclined figure the rest of this one out. It's 2 in the morning here and I'm tired.
