So like anyone whos played a fps, im excited about the tf2, portal, and episode 2. my problem is with the way that everything is packaged together. I feel like i just dropped $50 on hl2, counterstrike, and episode 1. Why should i pay another $50 for half the stuff i already have? Would it really be too much to make a $30 box with just the new stuff. I mean i get the desire for companies to make money. I figure that i will just wait this one out until the inevitable separation and play some 360 or wii for a while. On a side note i work in music/movie retail and one of things that kill me is the constant re-release of bonus/Dir. cut/re-mix/anniversary albums or dvds. Im never really happy to buy the same thing more than once. That might be the root of my hate.

Nice big font.
Portal, Episode 2 and TF2 would all be $80 seperately at the MSRP that is listed on steampowered.com. So, for $50, you're getting those three and gift passes for other people for the older games.
Quit bitching.
Legacy on
Can we get the chemicals in. 'Cause anything's better than this.
it seems al ittle silly that the $70 I paid for HL2 and Ep1 doesn't net me any discount or anything, but I assuage these feelings by telling myself that $50 is a great price for TF2 + Portal + Ep2 in any case.

Dude. The fact that it's 50 bucks is a discount in itself, considering how much all three by themselves cost.
Darlan. You're not a man if you don't want TF2 and/or Portal. I'm sorry.
Hand over your man license.
To me, Portal looks like a little physics demonstration that would be fun for maybe two hours, and online-MP-only FPSes never hold my attention past the first week. Just not my thing.
My license was null when I bought Super Princess Peach the other day anyways.
Wait a second. HL2: Episode 2 has been confirmed for a $30 standalone download? 50% more expensive than Episode 1? Is it supposed to be noticeably longer and cooler than Episode 1? Because all things considered, I don't really want to buy the whole package - I didn't find the free game that inspired Portal to be especially fun & I'm not a fan of online FPS. At $30, it's going to be a lot harder to justify with all the other games vying for my money this holiday season.

Urahonkey's collecting our man licenses. He's the fellow in the corner with the scissors and the suggestively raised eyebrows.
I'm fairly certain that Valve will drop in the black box as a steam only offering after the games are officially released. Guess we'll find out next month!
I love these threads "Man Valve is trying to sell me games a great price! FUCK THEM!"
Thats not the point. Yeah its a great bargain for those that never bought Half-Life 2 or Episode 1, but for those that had, we we're going to have the option of the cheaper Black Box that only contained the new content. Instead they're making us pay more than they originally announced, and all we get for it, is stuff we already have. I don't think the complaining would be as bad anyways if they had never announced the Black Box in the first place.

Exactly.
Look on the bright side, they're not selling each game for $60 on blue ray discs.
Nor are they charging $2 for horse armor. In case Gordon gets a horse or something.
Yeah, Valve has always given a shitload of amazing content. And Steam was made for me, as there's a 50% chance that any game I buy I will end up losing the disc or license key.
Also Valve helped me walk again, and helped my wife and I conceive a child.
The whole package is cheaper than buying them individually, but individually they're really expensive. $30 for TF2? DoD:S and CS:S, both multiplayer only games, were only $20, and TF2 only has 6 maps. Episode 2 costs $10 more than Episode 1, and it's supposed to be longer but you never know.

It's funny because Valve gave me a reason not to buy Ep2. Now I have more money to spend on the bazillion other games coming out this holiday. I've already given them $70 for Half-Life 2 and Ep1. I'm not made of money, and have no need to buy these games over again.
Episode 2 is supposed to be like 8-10 hours right? There are some full price console shooters that last that long. Now if you dislike multi-player FPS, then thats unfortunate, but so is stubbing your toe on the way to buying it, its hardly Valves fault. They can charge whatever the hell they want, if you don't like it, too bad. Personally, I think its awesome and extremely good value. I enjoy Portal, and TF2 is beyond cool.
The point for me at the moment is that I don't really feel like beta testing TF2 (despite the amount of fun people seem to be having with it) and so I don't want to preorder.
This is in the hope that when the games are actually released, steam will put up the black box and that the black box will be cheaper then the currently discounted orange box.
There is no factual basis that this will be the case, but I'm willing to wait to find out.
WHAT PART OF $30 + $30 + $20 = $80, 80 > 50 DO PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND!?
"but it comes with HL2 and ep 1 ahh bloo bloo"
SO FUCKING WHAT!? THEY'RE PRACTICALLY GIFTS AT THIS PRICE POINT TO GIVE TO OTHER PEOPLE. GOOD GOD.
What part of the originally announced Black Box price of $40<$50 do you not get? What part of, they're forcing us to spend another $10 for shit we don't need when we, the early adopters, have already spent $70 do you not get? What part of gifting is redundant since the person you gift them to will then have to have extra copies of them when they too then go buy The Orange Box because its the only cost efficient package out there do you not get?
We already get that its a 'good deal', but they're milking everyone for an extra $10 knowing people will pay it compared to the overpriced standalone prices(Which, also all seem about $10 too high each). Anyone that doesn't see this even the slight bit as shitting in the face of loyal fans, is a moron.
It sucks a tiny bit that there's no cheaper black box. But realistically, it would have been $40 most likely. The individual prices for each component are reasonable, so it's pretty much a steal.

HL:EP2 is retail priced for $29.95 standalone.
Portal is retail priced for $19.95 standalone.
Pretend HL2 and HL2:EP1 aren't in the package at all, then enjoy your $79.85 of software for $44.95.
Late adopters get the best deals.
猿も木から落ちる
Yeah, the only question for me is do I pick it up for the PC or 360.

Stop whining and read this post over and over until you get it in your head that it's cheaper this way anyway.
Hand over your man license.
Compared to a normal Valve development cycle, this is episodic.
My license was null when I bought Super Princess Peach the other day anyways.
It is episodic in the same way that The Godfather trilogy was episodic
I'm in the same boat. 8-)

Is this the only context where not playing half life 2 is counted as lucky?
I never thought I'd say this, but yes you are lucky you never bought HL2 and ep1.

Well, I didn't really have a good computer at that time. Unless somehow HL2 would have run real nice on a Radeon 9200 AGP POS GPU. =3
