For the first time in a good long while I'v realised I won't have time to play all the awsome games that are coming out, so recentley I'v had to make some descisions regarding what games to buy and what to avoid/pick up later. For instance, Sonic Rush 2 (import), Stranglehold and Halo 3 all come out within the same week for me, the same week I go back to university for my final year. It was hard but I'v decided to skip Halo 3 and buy Stranglehold and Sonc Rush instead, managing my gaming time with short, hour long or so sessions of Stranglehold when I get home and fancy a break from work and Sonic Rush 2 can be managed on the daily commute to and from uni. I would of liked to have given Halo 3 a go but it seems to me like one of those games that need a 'commitment' to get the most out of, I mean such things as learning multiplayer maps inside out, learning all the nuances of the new weapons and vehicles, playing for a week or two solid just to see the ending of the game and finding time to do all that other fun sounding stuff such as searching for secrets, getting achivements, messing around with the new online level editor thing, chatting on forums about all the cool shit you have found and when to plan multplayer games, etc. It just seems like a game that could dominate one's gaming time to me, you probably couldn't spend about an hour on it and feel satisifed with turning it off for the day, wheras I can easily blaze through a few zones in Sonic Rush 2 in an hour or advance ever further or unlock some achivements in Stranglehold in a spare hour.
Has anyone else had to make some hard descisions latley about how to manage their gaming time now that there are loads of great new games out/coming out? Does anyone else agree with me on the whole 'epic games needing commitment to really enjoy' thing? I'm just using gaming as some throwaway fun at the moment, hence my daily games of Streets of Rage 2 co-op and purchase of Stranglehold.
For the longest time, I was planning on buying a 360+Halo 3 this fall, but I've recently realized that I won't have enough time to play even the couple of Wii games I want this year, let alone plunk down the cash/time on a new system. College is such a busy and poor time of life.
Someday, though. RE5 may force my hand in a year or so.
Yeah, every time I think about getting a game, it's always the time that concerns me rather than the money, now. For instance, I've had a 360 for about three weeks now, and I've only turned it on about four times.
Yeah, I just started a graduate program today. Tons of stuff I want is coming out (or is already out), but I have no idea when I'll have the time to play all of them.
So whoever is complaining out there can refer to this post and be ashamed of themselves on the difficulty of managing time by comparing themselves to someone who can't manage his time no matter how hard he might try.

I just wanna cry now.
I have an exam on the 30th. Guess it's not as bad as launch day but I'll still be playing Halo just as much on the 30th as I do on the 25th.

Well, this string of exams look geared to be fucking badass and important, so I can't afford to screw them up. I'll still be picking the game up on launch, and god, I'm gonna lock that game up somewhere and throw the keys away.
Ive yet to purchase Metroid Prime 3 Corruption because I picked up BioShock instead. However now that I just finished BioShock, Halo 3 comes out in 5 days so I will pick that up instead, simply because a single-player shooter can wait, multiplayer is more fun when you get in on the ground floor.
I have no clue how I'm going to budget my time in October and November, nor how I will afford all the games that interest me. Some of them will have to wait till next year or they will just get underplayed.
Anything that isn't AAA shit I need to play on release I'm ignoring until next year. Games like Zack and Wiki and Fire Emblem Wii and Skate and Eternal Sonata are games I would totally be buying if there just wasn't so much other stuff to play,
I'm trying to ignore the majority of the new huge releases because I'm trying to chip away at my backlog.
It's not working. I'm thinking of picking up a new monitor, though, so spending a couple hundred on that instead of new games will mean I'll have fewer games to play, and lower prices on them once I do get around to buying them.
It's nice to have a 7on 7off schedule just for my gaming stuff. Generally the way I work it is I'll play a storydriven short game on my 7on, that way I can relax and get through the week with a little adding keeling.
Last week I played stranglehold, the week on prior it was bioshock. This week I'v broken the mold a bit since I just built a new comp, so its been pretty much TF2 all week. The off time consists mostly of non-stop mmoing and achievement clean up!

I've taken drastic measures. I made a list in Excel of every game I own that I haven't beaten, ordered by release date. I'm going through all of these games in chronological order, and not playing anything else until I've finished them. I currently have 69 games to play before I allow myself to touch anything new, starting with Super Mario RPG for the SNES. For some titles I'll have to come up with artificial measures for completion (how do you beat Meteos, for instance?)

I think I'm finally at a point where I can just stop getting new games and work on what I've backlogged.
The difficult part will be prioritizing.
There's what I want to play(Stella Deus, Odin Sphere), and games that I need to play to get to games I want to play(Suikoden II before III, Xenosaga II before III, Wild ARMs 2 before 3/4, etc.), and last and definitely least, games I have that I want to play despite their mediocrity in hopes they'll eventually deliver(Magna Carta, Lunar: Dragon Song, Tales of Phantasia).
I work 8-4 in the office and then come home, cycle around for an hour in a vain attempt to do something energetic and then work another 3 hours minimum on freelance stuff. After dinner and a trip to the girlfriend's to see how she's doing it'll be 11 and I'll have an hour to squeeze in some gaming before I have to go to bed to wake up at 7 the next day and repeat it all.
It meant I played RE4 over a month, and Bioshock will have taken the same amount of time by the time I (hopefully) finish it next week in time for skate. Then hopefully I'll have enough time for when Ep2 / Portal / TF2 comes out before the new Sam & Max series starts later on in the year.
Now I'm raking it in basically I have all the money in the world to buy consoles, upgrade the computer and buy videogames. Just no bloody time to play any.

The one about the fucking space hairdresser and the cowboy. He's got a tinfoil pal and a pedal bin
i havent picked up skate yet, because im saving for halo 3, pgr 4, sega rally and ace combat 6 this coming month. thats gonna hurt the wallet, and the weather is still nice enough that i can skate in real life.
First off, I'm not buying an HD console this year. I can afford it, but I already have too much to play. Fortunately, I work nights, and on long shifts, so I get three or four days off every week (and long weekends), and I can still balance a social life and gaming time pretty neatly. (When I'm not posting here, anyway.)
Anyway, since I decided to cut way down on the amount of games I needed to buy by not purchasing a 360 or PS3 this year, I figured the next step is to cut down on games that happen to be massive timesinks. I love Metroid too much to not play Metroid Prime 3, so that's next on my "to play" list anyway. I also have Sonic and the Secret Rings to get through, but at least that can be played in short bursts. All the RPGs (J or Western, doesn't matter which) have been moved to the back shelf of my game collection, until I've worked through my backlog.
I'm also prioritizing portables. I just bought a PSP Slim, and of course there's my old trusty DS. Portables are perfect for short bursts of play (like when nothing's happening at work :P ), and I tend to finish portable games more often than console games these days. Most of my portable games lean heavily towards action, platforming, or arcade-type play (shmups, beat-em-ups), all good genres for short play sessions.
The VC is also a godsend. I'm starting to think it should be mandatory for all games to have at least temporary save states. If devs are worried about people abusing them, fine, have the save states deleted when the game reloads. I find I finish pretty much every VC game I buy so far, just because I can hop out whenever I need or want to; I don't have to look for a stupid ass save point. Also, I love being able to sample games from systems I could never afford, like the TurboGrafix. I can't wait for the Neo Geo and PC Engine games to go up on the US servers.

I'm trying to overcome the time until the big hitters like Metroid Prime 3, Zelda PH and Mario Galaxy are finally being released here in Europe, with games I pick up on the go like Settlers 2: Next Generation, KOTOR 2 or Sin & Punishment next week. If anything, I have too much free time for gaming (that and I only own a Wii right now, so no Bioshock or Assasins Creed for me this year).
I still have Zelda on the Wii to finish off from Xmas. That about sums up my gaming time. I did put it aside to finish Super Paper Mario which must be the only game I've finished this whole year.
Also, Alfred J Kwak, your name reminds me of this guy:
I just confined myself to handhelds. Sold off the Wii and the PS2 and just have the DS and PSP now. Home console games, especially RPG's or online games, just take up way too much time. You just have to draw a line and stick to it.
I've been playing alot of RTS games recently. Other than trying to set up times to play with friends and people from the board, I can always get a game in pretty quick. I only have lots of free time on weekends and I like doing other stuff.
Between work and everything else I have such limited gaming time. I basically have to limit my purchases to games I really want to play. Unfortunately there are a ton of games I want this Fall/Winter.
So basically I plan to buy 8-10 games between now and the end of the year and put several of them into my queue to play when I get around to them. Lucky Q1-Q2 tends to be a rather dry time for game releases so I should be able to catch back up.
Basically I just find an hour here and there to play. My playtime periods are short and games with shorter objective times, like MP3 and especially DS games work best for me now. As well as online games like TF2 or ET:QW.
When I have some free time I pop in a game I enjoy. When I feel I've got all the enjoyment out of the games I have I buy a new one, though with x-box live this is a rarity.
I never have, and never will, have enough time for all the games I want to play. Partly this is because I'm interested in playing waaaay more games than most people, I have a huge backlog. Working full time isn't helping either.

I hear ya. The DS is satisfying my needs pretty well at this moment. Phantom Hourglass will probably keep me occupied until at least November, which by then all the major console titles will be coming out.

The hell kind of online game outside of strategy takes "way too much time"? unless you only have five minute break periods it's not really that time intensive or consuming unless you want it to be. The average shooters probably average maybe twenty minutes for a game, with something like gears you can have matches averaging as short as five minutes if you want. Add in finding a game and general set up time that's no more then ten minutes of your time.
Edit: Yeah, those are a) a pretty small sub set of games (and not online as they stated) and b) the same would be true of playing those genres on a handheld.
Double plus edit: That was aimed at the now non-existant Junkie post.
technically gaming time for me should be 6:00pm - 11:00 or a little after but unfortunately the devil woman sees fit to rob me of all freetime. I can't even finish Heavenly Sword and it's a freakin 5 hour game.
Currently playing Neverwinter Nights and all its expansions. I'll follow that with Neverwinter Nights 2 along with its expansion. Jade Empire is ready to go -- even bought an Xbox 360 pad to play it with. Hellgate London comes out at the end of October.
On the horizon -- I'm getting urges to Tutu through the complete Baldur's Gate. Planescape might actually not look funky with a portion of the right hand UI cut off on my current computer. Icewind Dale I and II need another shot. Fallout I and II as well, if the resolution doesn't absolutely kill my eyes. Possibly even Arcanum if I can stomach the combat animations and quite possibly Temple of Elemental Evil with the unofficial fixes.
At this point, the only reason KoTOR and KoTOR 2 aren't even on the radar is because I've beat them both enough times, and I don't own Vampire...

I think the only thing that's going to distract me from that is Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect.

Horribly. Around 2100 hours of playtime this year, most of it WoW.
