Need a new TV!

Ok, so right now I have about $350 to spend, I might be able to squeeze some cash out of my parents as a present or something, but its probably best we work with 350.

I need a new TV, well more accurately I want one. The one I have is starting to die, it can prrobably be fixed but I would rather get me something new. If I can get that extra cash I might be able to get an HD, I think my friend got one for 4-500. Basically I have never bought a tv so I don't know what to look for or what all I need. I have cable, but I don't think I have HD cable, so the HD tv might not be worth it except I keep hearing about the signals switching over to HD. Don't know what kind of truth is behind that.

So what help can you give me?

For $350, your options are a little limited. You can get a decently sized non-HD tube monster, or a smallish (23-26") LCD if you catch an off brand on sale.

At that price, you won't be happy with an HD tv.
    Really.

If I were to buy a new TV and wanted an HD, I don't think I would be happy with one that is less than $800ish.

Look around for a used CRT HDTV. I picked up a nice 30" 1080i monster for $200 the other day. Geometry's a bit off, but hey, it was $200.

Signals are switching to digital (and even then who knows), not HD... pretty much any new tv you're going to buy today will have component/s-video inputs as well

I bought a 27" samsung SDTV in the same position a year ago, it was on sale at best buy for ~350 at the time (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8293508&type=product&id=1172880154345), and I've been pretty happy with it... at that size (and with my crappy vision anyway) it wasn't worth going up to HD at the time, though now it seems there's a 1080i version for around a hundred more (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8292796&type=product&id=1172880153821), so that might be worth considering. At that price point you're not talking about a huge size anyway, so there won't be much of a difference between the various HD specs unless you're like 2 inches from the TV.

If you get an HD tv, you'll probably want to get HD cable as it's usually pretty cheap (here it's like 8 or $10 more per month, though that's if you have digital cable already; if you don't, then it could be a bit more to switch over), and otherwise you're somewhat wasting the HD-ness...
