FFS I've done something real stupid

So, in a fit of rage and stupidity I received some bad news that made me lash out on one of the walls in my Dad's place. Without thinking i punched a noticable dent into it. We already don't get along and I really don't need him to get any ammo against me. I don't usually stay here, so putting up a picture or something would only be a temporary measure as I'm moving out real soon. Luckily he's away for two more days, man this was a dumb idea.

I'm not much of a wall expert, the damage is about an inch squared. I'd be real greatful for any advice.

Well you could always go to a hardware store, ask one of the guys there what you need to fix the dent. Odds are they will suggest some kinda of wall putty. Get that and a little paint (don't forget to match the color your would be surprised to see how many whites there are) and see how that works out for ya.

Do you have extra paint that matches the current color of the wall? If so you have two options depending on how deep the dent it. Option one is just go buy some spackle, sand the dent a little to make it rough and fill in the dent, sand it so its even with the wall and then wipe it down to get rid of the dust and paint it. Option two is if the dent is to big/deep and that would to be to cut the dent out of the wall, fill it it with drywall, spackle over that and sand so its even and then paint it. I'd recommend option one first if possible and the other way is quite a bit more difficult, if you don't have extra paint your pretty much fucked.

edit: Maybe other people have had better luck, but every single time I've tried to match paint its never looked the same. Its close enough that if you paint a whole room it would look fine and sometimes even a wall, but matching and then painting a patch is noticeable at best and at times completely obvious. If you have no other option than you kind of have to do it, but if you can find matching paint in the house somewhere I recommend using that.

As others mentioned it will depend on the size of the damage and how bad it is.

Chances are it's not an unpainted wall, so take a small chunk of it and take it to the local Home Depot/etc. Most of these places tend to have color match machines that will mix paint according to the sample given. Unless you have extra of the pain lying around, just get a small bit of this paint from them.

To repair the wall there are 2 ways to do it depending on how bad the damage is.

If it's a shallow dent or a very small hole, just rough it up with some sand paper and then Spackle it. Let that dry some, sand it smooth, then paint it.

If it's a real mess, you will need a drywall knife (or anything that can cut into it) to cut out the area. Then you sand down the edges of the hole. They sell small mesh grids (kind of like chicken wire) that you then place in the rear of the hole and then Spackle on to that. The process after this is the same as above, it's just used more Spackle.

All the materials should not cost much depending on how much they charge you for the paint. Will cost more if you need to pick up any tools.

Spackle can be applied with any broad, flat, and sturdy tool/piece of junk you have handy.

The good news of this situation is that all these fixes are easy, providing you dont need to actually rebuild any wall. And, the materials are generally pretty cheap. (won't repeat the same wall putty/paint stuff, but PLEASE remember to get a paint sample of at least the size of a quarter and bring it with you to home depot so they can match color)

Also, do the picture thing too. It will hide whatever you did whilst it dries and sets, if that is an issue.

Don't forget to hide the evidence. Worst thing would be if you did all that work, just for your dad to come home and see all that crap lying around.
