The nerd in me is going insane right now. I'd like to get a Halo Master Chief Helmet to be able to sport around Halloween time this year, but they are rare and all hand crafted... $500 for one on Ebay right now. I always see these posts when people post about selling these that they arn't the "cheap vacuum formed ones"...
My question is, where can I get one of those cheap vacuum formed ones? Heh, it sounds rediculous but it would be fun. I'd get some mat board, fibreglass cloth and paint and start trying to craft one myself but I don't have the work space, materials, tools nor knowledge on how to do that.
I saw a soft mask one. Shitty but if it's what you really want.
Also, I'd be prepared to pay upwards of a 100 dollars for the vacuum formed ones.
Though really, with Halo 3 so close to the halloween time, this is the only year you can ever really dress with something related to Master Chief and have it look cool. I'd just eat the 500 dollars and get the good helmet.
Gorgeeen on
No god damnit! The sheriff is a nig*Church Bells*r!!
Eh, I really WANT to drop the 500 on it, but I just can't get myself to do it. ESPECIALLY since I can only wear it 1 year. $100 I'm much more likely to feel better about doing, and I'd happily spend it on a vacuum.
I'm wondering if I can buy a paintball mask, install a gold anti-fog flare filter on the glask and buy some green/gold paint, paint it up. Might look stupid and have to explain it Keep the original topic going, but does anyone happen to know any paintball masks that might work for this purpose to look masterchiefish with some modification?
I was hoping for one I might be able to keep to use for purposes after halloween, or to keep on a shelf. And that means I'd have to sit with the $500 sink (when there's so much more I need to buy for $500 :P)
This Dye one is cool, a lot of vents holes, though: Actionvillage.com
The Dye one looks the most like it, however its $100 and if I can supposedly get a Vacuum formedd straight up Master Chief helmet, I'd rather just go right for it and not have to mod/paint a paintball mask.
Alternatively, you could get a maritime Navy uniform (eg., Master and Commander), and when someone asks, say you're the prequel to Halo...
Also an interesting idea, however I'm going to be probably doing Halloween with a bunch of non-geeks and people who don't know anything about video games. They wouldn't get the prequel to Halo . With a Chief's getup, at the very least I can tell them I'm a robot and their little brains will think it's alright.
It's not exact, but if you paint it up and maybe cover some of the vents I bet everyone would recognize you.
That may work. Not quite putting it as an issue solved though, still hoping to find a true master chief mask, i'll keep this going until either we exhaust all resources on a Master Chief mask and I have to go with a paintball one, or we find one.
Anything made custom is going to be relatively expensive, because it's a niche market that is usually technically illegal (although AFAIK most companies don't actively prosecute the makers). For example, just getting an unpainted, unsanded resin cast of a Star Trek phaser or Aliens pulse rifle replica can cost $250 or more.
Vacuforming is how actual movie propmasters make things like stormtrooper armour, so I think the "not a cheap vacuformed helmet" line is a canard. It is pretty simple technically, so if you really want to make your own and have some woodworking tools already you can almost certainly do it for less than the cost of buying a premade helmet. A site like Starship Modeler will have a lot of details on the process, but basically:
- Build a wooden box whose top is pegboard, and has a hole on the side to connect a vacuum cleaner hose to.
- Sculpt the pieces of your design out of wood or clay.
- For each piece, set the wood/clay positive on the box. Heat up a sheet of vacuform plastic (held in a frame) in your oven. Place the hot plastic over the positive and turn on the vacuum cleaner to suck the plastic down tight around the original.
- Glue the pieces together.
- Add additional details (lights, etc).
- Paint.
Buying a paintball mask would definitely be faster though.
They've got a real neat papercraft section in there and some of them turn it very very nice. Also pretty simple too... Print out the pieces, glue together, you now have a base structure of the entire helmet. Leave as is and paint, or for stability, buy some resin and paint on.
I think I'll go this route and give it a shot. Might make a fun project

Maybe go to Wally World or SportMart and see if they have a cheap safety set with pads and everything, and spray paint it all?

Unfortunatally for me my artistic abilities are small, so carving wood?
I did run across this real awesome site though dedicated to making the Mjolnir armor,
