Security Risk of Employer Making a Copy of Passport?

I met with someone to sign some paperwork today for a job, and they required either a drivers license + social security card or a passport for ID purposes. I brought my passport because I've no clue where I put my ss card, and the lady made a copy of it. I'm a bit paranoid, and am now wondering if that was a dumb thing to do. I'm from the US if that matters.

I'm probably over-concerned, but stories of identity theft and such scare the shit out of me.

Required for any job in the US.

Even if she wanted to steal your identity, she can do much more with your SS card than your passport.

Ah alright, thanks. Heh, it's my first job, so I've no idea what the normal procedures are. Also wasn't sure if the various numbers on the passport were of any importance.
