Allright, here's the exposition:

I have a Compaq Presario R4000 notebook, with the normal RAM swapped out for 2 gigs of kingston RAM. I'm running the latest catalyst drivers for my ATI 200M, 15.4" widescreen monitor, but that's probably not relevant. Everything else is standard for the system hardware-wise though. I have AVG run daily scans and stay updated, and I run spybot weekly and update. No problems recently at all. It runs peachy and contains the most recent files of mine. I have everything backed up on an external, the data on there is maybe a week or two old, and there are some files that aren't backed up. Luckily, nothing important isn't backed up. I think the HDD is fine, but if it's not... well, I can recover(also if it's totally borke I may build a new computer and see about throwing this HDD in or getting a case for it and hooking it up via USB to transfer the latest files. Actually, the biggest files that aren't backed up are my save files). Anyways, now for the complicating incident.

I was on these forums(Firefox, fully updated), with 4 tabs open. Thunderbird(fully updated) was also open, and AIM6.0. I opened the "free games 2007" thread, and went to the Gamespot link, and opened up the BSG space sim, and started to download it from Fileplanet(might have been Filefront). Well, it doesn't start to download. The download window doesn't open. Also, Windows Media Player was opening, and froze. Firefox also froze. So I do what I always do when this happens: Task manager and end program. Well that doesn't work. So I try ending the processes. Oddly enough, this doesn't work. Hm. Well, my computer is locked up and not responding at all now, though it'll open the start menu, and start the general processes for programs and the task manager, it just won't close them when they're not responding. I wait a while, and nothing happens. Nothing's moving. Great, well, I figure I'll force a restart. So I hold down the power button 'till it forces a restart, wait about 5 seconds, and then hit the power button again. The "COMPAQ" screen comes up, and I can hear the computer starting up.

Then all sounds but the fans stop.

And it doesn't move from the "COMPAQ" screen. And when I hit f10 it doesn't go to the setup screen, nor does it make any more sounds. So I try shutting it down again and trying again. No dice. So I leave it for 5 minutes. Turn it on again, wait 5 minutes. No dice. Every time the same thing happens. It sounds like it's starting up, gets to the "COMPAQ" screen, and then it stops doing anything other than running the fans.

So.

What is all messed up with my compy? Is the processor dead? Is there anything I can do? Do I need a new compy? Am I just screwed? What could I have done to prevent it?

Thanks!

    My money is on overheating.

Are you being sure to operate the notebook with the correct type of surface underneath, with no fans blocked?

The computer is elevated off of the surface(nothing high tech, just a port replicator keeping it off the actual surface), I clean out the fans once or twice a week with air.

The surface is one of those faux-wood plastic desk thingies. And I've had it on the surface for quite a while now, with no problems, and I've never felt it to be running hot. Don't have a temp sensor to back that up, but it never felt crazy hot.

EDIT: Ok, I managed to get through to Compaq tech support, and they suggested reseating the RAM. I did so, and even though it looked fine and not out of alignment, apparently that's what the computer needed. So. Weird, but yay. Fixed!
