Profile not being allowed to play online with Xbox Live

So I'm having some difficulty.

I created an Xbox Live account online before I owned the 360 and before I ever played online. I recovered my gamertag successfully but I can't play anything online. Gears of War...Halo 2 or 3...nothing. I can use my roommates profiles fine so it's not the parent settings (of which none were ever set up). Are there any thoughts on how to resolve this? I can use the marketplace and download stuff just fine but I can't play online.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have a Silver account... what color is the band on your little gamercard thing when you hit the home menu?

You have a Silver account. You need Gold. You need more money for Microsoft. Buy a Live subscription card. And you need more RAM.

That doesn't make any sense though because my roommates also have Silver accounts and I can play online with their tags no problem.

For the week or so, they let silver accounts play online because of Halo 3. They probably turned it off.

Get gold. Join the unwashed masses!

I don't own Halo 3 yet (I know...don't stone me). We're talking about any online game. I can play Gears of War and Halo 2 on my roommates Silver gamertags but when I try to play it says that the settings on my profile don't allow it or something along those lines.

Edit: Ok I got it now. Well I guess I'll have to upgrade if/when I ever feel the need to play online again.

They may still be on their 30 days of free Gold promotion. I believe they stopped doing this for recent XBox360 owners, though. That may be the problem.

Silver accounts, without promotional deals, can't play online, period.

You don't have to own halo to get the Week of free online play. Halo has to have been released to get the week of online play.

And the online play was not for Halo 3, it was all games, again, because of the release, not because of any purchase.

Anyways, try to play on his account again, because it probably won't work anymore if he's silver.

I think. Oh, and the whole 30 days on purchase thing I'm a moron.
