Unexpected Los Angeles trip

I'm going on a rather unexpected trip to Los Angeles in a couple of weeks (14th-16th) and really have no idea what to do there apart from the scheduled business bit. I'll have an afternoon-evening free, and then an afternoon later. Is there anything I should make pains to see? I thought I'd be off to New York, where the tourist opportunities are a little more obvious..

I'm from the UK if that makes any difference. It'll be my first (and probably only) trip to the US.

Other than Chinese hookers, there's nothing to do in LA, unless you stand around looking tattooed and sullen "doing something."

LA is a nightmare fucking town full of the most insincere people I've ever met. The ONLY reason we shouldn't nuke it into oblivion can be summed up in two words: Amoeba Records.

I live in Los Angeles and I don't even know how to answer this.

Are you going to have your own car or are you going to have to rely on someone else or public transportation to get around?

Shopping/people watching in Santa Monica on the 3rd St. promenade gives you access to the board walk and beach.

Walking down Hollywood Blvd is always an experience. The Chinese theatre and Pantages are down there along with tons of "interesting" people. Plus you can see the Hollywood sign from there.

Rodeo Drive is something to see.

Without knowing what you're interested in, this is hard to answer.

Okay...where in LA are you staying? That will define your options. Be aware that mass transit there only comes in various flavors of suck (though the DASH (the LA internal bus system) isn't too bad.)

The California Science Center is pretty fun to go to - very shiny and hands on. It's down in Exposition Park, by the Colosseum. I'd also recommend walking down Hollywood Blvd as well - you can get there by taking the Red Line, as well as the CityWalk, which is a tad more sanitized. Little Tokyo is another cool place to go, especially if you want to grab something to eat.

As for eating, if you go to the California Science Center, you should take the walk up Fig to Chano's - it's a little taco stand that's very good.

If you're looking for touristy things, my family had a good time visiting some of the studio tour-type things (especially warner bros, though that has more to do with me and my sister being immature and still liking animaniacs.. =) )

But yeah, if you're not interested in Hollywood-type stuff LA probably isn't in the top anything list of places in the US to visit

Question 1: Do you have a car? You need this if you want to do anything in LA outside the immediate area of your hotel.

If you're into that stuff, you can go to Disneyland or Universal Studios and have a fulfilling experience in an afternoon/evening. Santa Monica beach is the sort of "traditional" LA beach that you think it should look like. Hollywood is a dump, so don't go there. If you want to see what you think Hollywood is, go to Beverley Hills.

American sports events are always fun... you should see if anything is on while you're there.

You must also eat at an In n Out. And have a slice of cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory if you like cheesecake.

However, if you do so, make sure to learn the secret menu first. No, I'm not joking.

in N Out isnt something I'd reccomend to tourists... Its still fast food, even if its good quality fast food. Any restaraunt burger beats it.

However, if we're reccomending fast foods that are tasty, then check out Tito's Tacos. Very popular here in LA.

LA isn't a place with giant monuments to visit so its hard to tell tourists where to go, and many dont enjoy their trips here, however, there are an absurd amount of things to do from art gallery openings to concerts to giant block party raves.

Venice beach is fun to walk along. It has lots of interesting things to look at and shops to go into.

Santa Monica 3rd street promenade is also great for that, although not as interesting as Venice, its much higher class. The Santa Monica Pier is like a year-round carnival/amusement park. You could visit that.

Hollywood has lots of stuff to go take tours in if you're into that.

Downtown LA has.... tall buildings and a ghetto.

If you like beaches, we have plenty to beaches you can just hang out at. Oogle the LA girls.

If you want to see whats going on in LA while you're here, try going.com

I dunno, what do you enjoy?

Sadly, they won't let you order more than 4x4s anymore. You can get extra patties on the side, but you'll have to put them in the burger yourself.

I'm not sure what they do if you want more than 4 cheeses, but I find the best patty/cheese ratio is somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3 anyways.

My wife and I must be the only people in California that can't stand In n Out. Their burgers aren't anything special; they just put Thousand Island dressing on them and toast the buns. The fries are always small and squishy, despite the fact that they make them fresh. I really don't get why everyone hypes the chain; it's really not that great.

Their burgers are pretty good (meat-wise, I always get burgers without dressings like that anyway), though I think Wendy's are just as good if not better.. I totally agree with the fries, i've seriously considered buying mcdonalds fries before I go to in & out because they're so much worse that it detracts from the burgers

I was in LA for four days last month as part of a drive I went on. I really liked it, which was surprising given the amount of negativity some people have towards the city.

    Here's where I went:

    - Universal Studios (pricey, but they put on some very elaborate shows).
    - Various parts of Santa Monica, including one of the beaches. It was 115 degrees when I was there, so it was the first time I've been in ocean water and thought the temperature was nice. It was in the middle of a weekday, so the beach was almost deserted.
    - Malibu Creek State Park (it was too hot for me to hike around much, so I don't have much of an opinion about it).
    - The Hollywood Hills (really confusing to drive, but the views from the parks on top are very pretty).
    - Downtown LA to visit some of the old shooting locations from Heat, the tunnel that was in Blade Runner and the first Terminator film, and the Bradbury Building.
    - Vasquez Rocks (about 30 minutes NE of LA by car, it's a state park where essentially every science fiction TV series ever has filmed scenes, making it immediately recognizable as the generic alien planet location when you see it in person).

Here's where I wanted to go but didn't:

    - Griffith Observatory. I didn't do enough research, so I didn't know that the city has instituted an asinine shuttle-bus-only system where you have to make reservations several days in advance by phone or the internet rather than allowing you to drive up to the parking lot at the observatory itself. It's supposed to be really cool.
    - The parts of Hollywood with e.g. Grauman's Chinese Theatre, because I've seen them in so many old films and I thought it would be fun to see in person. This I just didn't have time for.
    - Echo Park. Again, I just didn't have time.

I did think I wasn't deficient in not being able to think of places in LA to go; thanks for reaffirming the fact that there's not a great deal to do there. :P

I'll be around LAX most of the time - hotel, business event and flight are all there. I won't have a car when I'm there, but I thought LA had good trams.. I don't think I'm going to be able to do much via walking in the short time I'm there, but I'll investigate your recommendations, blincoln; so thanks for those.

I guess they call them business trips for a reason.
