Animated Avatars?

I'm curious whether or not these forums allow for animated Avatars within the same size (Dimension wise) as the pictures? I'm one who enjoys meddling in FlashMX, and i would find it fun to have an animated avatar.

No. Animated avatars are not allowed.

Being ironical. They are allowed, but are subject to something like a 16kb size cap, and, as you guess, they must fall within the 64x64 dimension maximum.

    Also, welcome. :-)

I've seen some people with them. Do you have to be special or something? I want my Calvin and Hobbes to dance :-(

You either have to find a link to, or have on your HD, the animated .gif file you want as your avatar. It'll look best if it's 64 pixels x 64 pixels, and it will have to be at or under 16Kb.

You can ask somebody to make the animated avatar for you, or you can make it yourself...but there are no restrictions on who can or cannot have one.

You can technically have one, yes.

It is a good way to immediately get on my bad side, though.

Some people would say that's a good thing.

I think they are fun. Curious why that would put a person on your bad side?

Also does anyone know how to shrink a current animated GIF? I don't want to get on anyones bad side :-) but it could be useful for somewhere else if I shouldn't use it here. Thanks for the help.

The problem is that movement draws the human eye. People can't not look at movement - it's instinctual.

When you make a post, is your avatar the most important thing on the screen? If it's not, you probably don't want it moving.

I made mine from a gif I found online that a friend shrank for me, then I put the (badly drawn) hair over top of it using Photoshop. It, uh, isn't as easy to draw it and have it look right as I would've expected - luckily I really like things that look terrible.

I stared at naporean's avatar for like 30 seconds looking for some kind of subtle or slow animation.

Then I noticed the post date. And chuckled at myself for a second.

And yes, 9/10 animated avatars are terrible. Then again, 9/10 avatars are terrible.
    Hahahaha.

Yeah, I wondered if anyone would be confused about that.

It's supremely difficult to find an animated gif which is under 16kb and still looks good. I went through a few dozen before finally getting my current one, and even though I want to change it, I haven't been able to find one I like which fits the criteria.

It would be nice if the limits were relaxed a little, but that's supremely unlikely to happen... I saw the last thread someone made about that.

As to how it was done:
I opened it in Image Ready, changed it to 64pixels tall with proportions constrained.

Also, you bumped a three year old thread for this?
