Lately Koei has seemed to crank out Destiny Warrior title after Destiny Warrior title ...
Bladestorm looked like more of the same so I think I can be forgiven for waiting until now to download the demo.
What I got totally surprised me ... the demo is a blast and alot different from typical Destiny Warrior titles. In the game you can take control of units of soldiers/pikemen/archers/elephanteers/calvary/etc and move your unit into absolutely epic battles (we're talking over a hundred units on screen clashing, Braveheart style).
Killing units levels you up so you get the EQ "ding" feeling, and you also get nice pickups to increase your armour, "abilities", troop strength, etc ... the game is like they took Destiny Warriors, added a whole new layer of battlefield strategy and tossed in some RPG elements into the mix.
If you have a PS3 or Xbox360 you owe it to yourself to go download the demo ... it weighs in at a massive 1.9 gigs.
You can also check out
some impressions from Gamespot at TGS and a
first look they did awhile ago that sums up the game pretty well.
Anyone else enjoying this demo as much as I am? And more importantly does anyone know if there will be multiplayer skirmishes? They would be epic, EPIC.

And does it still look like a PS2 game?
Kinda looks like Koei's moving into Kingdom Under Fire territory, but I'll get back once I play the thing.
While I never played Kessen I've heard that Bladestorm is somewhat like it in terms of how the gameplay works.
I am, however, very certain there is no possible way the PS2 could do what was happening in the 360 Bladestorm demo ... when I say "epic" charges into entire armies I really do mean entire armies -- not just a unit or two.
At some points there were over 100 units on screen battling it out ... with no sign of slowdown at all on the system. It was impressive.
The graphics aren't going to burn out your eyes ... but the sheer scale of what's happening is what impressed me.
Well, let me say that placing it during the 100-years war is a stroke of genius. The setting is fucking awesome, especially if you're getting sick of the Asian wankery that Koei always does. The campaign mode has loads of potential, with reputation, deployment, mercenary allegiances and other story stuff. That aspect has definitely won me over.
The gameplay, well, it feels like Koei Does Kingdom Under Fire, but it's not especially fun. The demo is some very low-level stuff, so I don't know what it will entail in the long run, but you basically just control a squad and press a button every 5-10 seconds. Playing as archers was boring as hell; cavalry was a bit more manageable, but it's also hard to see what the hell is going on, and almost impossible to tell exactly what army is fighting what. I wouldn't pay full price for it, but I am intrigued, and would check it out on a later occasion.
It's a pity we didn't have that screenshot when we were doing that photoshop thread on putting bonuses into real-life situations, it looks like it would have been good material.
You also have a multiple days of fighting to achieve your objective.
Instead of getting the base I was hired to take on the first day, I used the first two days of fighting to take 5 other bases around the goal and then on the last day I took it and finished my mission with lots of fame and gold!
I can see the gameplay getting a bit stale after a while but the scale is what keeps me going, it's like being in a Total War game only you get to control the squads yourself.
Not a full price buy for me, but I will get this someday.
Also, I now know why the PS3 version of this game sold so much in Japan (360 version isn't yet released there): This game is good.
I think that was what the appeal is for me too ... the sense of scale is huge, the game does a fantastic job of immersing the player into it's gameworld.
That said, I also worry about the gameplay getting stale which is why I'll probaly rent first ... for a demo though I thought Bladestorm was pretty kickass.
I really love the whole region/bases thing.
Did you run across the entire Normandy yet? It's REALLY big and there are a ton of bases: little villages, towns, a really big castle ect...
Also the idea of having a real "campaign" as your mission is genius. What i mean is the "you have this objective. it is here. Now you have 4 days to achieve this objective" mechanic.
You actually choose to spawn at far away bases, taking them over to get more reinforcements and items and then at the last day, you conquer the objective. Of course there can also be sieges over multiple days if the base defense points are high enough.
This game has no multiplayer though, right?
A pity, online multi would have been SWEET to the MAX.
I have to say "Buy me bladestorm or go to hell!"
Kick ass.
A demo thread could work quite nicely. You could have a section for recently released demos, a section for widely praised demos and whatnot. I'd read it.
Oh god, male voice 3 is hilarious, though.
well played clerks
also yes, I thoroughly enjoyed the demo
And it's really not much like Dynasty Warriors at all. You can't lone-wolf it. If you do that, you'll die in seconds.
The only thing i dont understand is how to make the rest of your troops do what you want, as in, if youre fighting for england, theres a bunch of english troops who stand around at a bridge in the second mission, and you can charge the fort but they dont follow you... plus other units that do work for you, sometimes theyll stand around doing nothing while you take one unit of swordsmen into an enemy castle. It seems like your ally troops dont do anything unless either the enemy gets close enough, or theres a static trigger to tell them to move forward.

Uh...I'm hoping you'll be able to un-invert the camera controls then?
Is that last part correct? It is so awkward(but sexy).
But I'm such a fag for stuff surrounding the hundred years war.
no, it really isn't
How did this game turn out? I assume it's out now. Got hold of the demo over the weekend, and was tickled in a way I can't quite define. Took a unit of spear-wielding cavalry all across the region, charging and wrecking the place up good.
Impressions? Or did no one actually buy it in the end?
Maybe if it comes down to like 30 bucks ill pick it up, if i havent rented it by then.

That doesn't mean it isn't damn fine, though. It works very well and because you can choose to level and fight with many different types of units it doesn't get old as fast as DW/SW does. It's a really, really fun game.
XBL/PSN/Steam: APZonerunner
Too bad that it will basically go ignored this holiday season, although I'm looking forward to the marked down price in January that is almost inevitable.
A shame there is no multiplayer ... going up against 4 or 5 of your friends over Live/PSN would have been fun.
Yah, it's very similar to KUF, but I think it's very fun game.

Basically, I like Koei games even though they keep putting out the same stale bullshit for the most part - I liked that they were kind of trying to branch out back with Crimson Sea and I'll probably eventually pick up Fatal Inertia. I'm happy that they're toying with their formula with Bladestorm.
