I did a search, and sifted through the various Xbox 360 threads, but they didn't have concrete answers to my questions.
I'm thinking about buying an Xbox 360 to use as a media center and to of course play games on. However, I have been quite wary due to the RROD and issues that seem to plague just about every xbox 360. I want to buy one on eBay too, as they tend to go quite a bit cheaper. I understand Microsoft's warranty on the RROD has been extending to three years, so if I buy one from the last year or so, I should be okay? Do I need a receipt from the seller to get the warranty if it decides to RROD? I'm looking at the Premium model and want to spend about $450 Australian fun bucks. I saw a 360 go for only 380 + shipping the other day, wish I had've bought it. Is there anything I need to look out for here so I don't get screwed? Thanks for the assistance.

Make sure the seller states it is untampered with and in good working order. Also make sure there are pictures of the system you are getting. You need to look out for the warranty stickers being intact. If they are broken, Microsoft will not touch your system at all.
RROD can be fixed on your own cheap if it's the only thing wrong with your system, but doing so voids your warranty. And obviously, not being the original owner, you can't verify what else was done if your system has been opened.
As to needing a receipt or not? Not sure about Australia, but in the US you "generally" do not for RROD, but there have been some situations where people have needed it.
I can tell you that I just recently did this and got burned quite bad. The e-bay auction STATED the unit was in good working order and had even "been sent in to be fixed."
Well, not 24 hours after use did the unit start locking up semi consistently, until it red-ring'd three weeks later. Upon further inspection I noticed gashes on the back of the unit and that the OEM sticker was broken.
Another month and a paypal claim in my favour later, the guy finally admitted to opening the unit himself and that MS refused to fix it.
Given the large amount of bad units out there combined with the large amount of colossally greedy and stupid people on the internet, it's definitely a very bad choice. I eventually shelled out full price for a fresh Xbox. And you should do the same, you'll spend more, but you'll have the security of knowing that your unit hasn't been raped by some drooling internet douche bag.
Also, I bet you some stores simply have a replacement policy for bad xboxes these days.

Do not feel trapped by the need to achieve anything, this way you achieve everything.
Oh, hey I'm making a game! Check it out: Dr. Weirdo!
Seriously, at $380 + shipping you're barely saving any money. Get a new one. Or at least a used or refurbished one from some place like Gamestop who isn't going to fuck you over.

The EB prices (we don't have gamestop here but same difference) are that close to full prices it is not worth while whatsoever.
Buy a new one, this way you may end up with the falcon chipset and HDMI cables.
I have recieved an offer from a fellow PA'er which I might follow up. As long as the RROD warranty is there I should be alright. Cheers guys. Thank you Zonkytonkman . Why are you selling it? Fed up?
