Disappearing gigabytes, wireless internet trouble.

Just today, I finished a two month stint as a subject in a sleep study. The study demanded that I not know the time of day or the length of time between one moment and another and, because of this, the technicians would only allow me to have my laptop if they did two things to it first.

The first step was to install a program called Freeze that disabled my computer's internal clock. I've already deleted this.

The second step was to somehow turn off my computer's ability to detect wireless networks.

Unfortunately, it being Columbus Day, the technician wasn't available to bring my laptop to its former form. Thinking I could just fix it all by doing a System Restore, I attempted one as soon as I got home. After my first attempt, though, I was notified that I needed at least 200 or so MB of free space to perform the restore. This was strange since, at the time of my attempt, I had over 10 GB. Worse, after looking at how much free space I now had, I was alarmed to see the number at below 800 MB.

I then proceeded to make a second attempt after deleting 3 or 4 GBs or worthless crap. Again, the restore was not successful and I was left with below 800 MB of free space.

So, does anyone know what's going on, or how to fix it? I'm assuming that the problem with the system restores is separate from whatever was done to my laptop, but I suppose I can't be sure.

P.S. I'm only online right now because I'm directly connected to the router. I still can't catch wireless networks.

Also, the laptop is a Gateway that using Windows XP.

Stupid question: is your wireless card on?

Are you running Vista? Turn off System Restore and delete your system restore data, and then reformat. Seriously, System Restore isn't THAT useful for backups older than a day, and for whatever reason - at least in my experience - you seem to lose 10gb a day to System Restore in Vista.

Do not feel trapped by the need to achieve anything, this way you achieve everything.
