UPDATE: Computer going boom!

Ok, so I meet and exceed all the specs for all the source games.

Ok, so here's the general problem when I try to run the orange box games.

When I load HL2 everything runs fine.
When I load Episode 1 the game freezes just before the game part actually starts and I get the error: "Internal Driver Error in IDirect3DDevice9:: Present()"

When I load Episode 2 or TF2 the game when it's just about to actually enter the game BSODS with the reports seen below, I've switched the memory from slot to slot.

Portal worked just this morning, and the computer ran out of battery power and went to hibernate when it BSODed with a flickering BSOD and then I had to shut it down. After recharging the battery, whenever I load portal right before it actually goes into the game it gives the flickery-BSOD that I can't read.

I've run all of the DirectX Diagnostics, Uninstalled and reinstalled the video drivers and catalyst suite.
I'm running off of AC power.
I can run all other games, simply the source games seem to make my computer explode.

So. Any thoughts?

Reboot your computer. Mash F8. Select the option that says "Do not reboot on failure" or something to that effect.

Write down the error that the BSOD gives you, and either bring it back here or hit google.

Oi, I'll have to do that. I need to hit the sleep-age now, but I'll get to that tomorrow night.

Ok, I wrote down the error I get when playing HL2Ep1, and still have some time before class to crash my computer again, so I'll do that. But the error I got was an Internal Driver Error: Something something Direct3d(I promptly forgot to take the card with me that had the error written down)

Ok, the error is as follows:

    STOP: 0x0000008E (0x00000005, 0xE7B006B6, 0xA7FCF8EC, 0x00000000)

So far google has told me that I should reseat the memory which works on everything else, so I know that's not the problem, and it's told me that there's no info on the full string.

Ok, I ran the Windows Debuging tool and got this:
    BugCheck 1000008E, {c0000005, , a7fc58ec, 0}

***** Kernel symbols are WRONG. Please fix symbols to do analysis.

    Probably caused by : ati3duag.dll ( ati3duag+10ae05 )

So is that then a problem with just my video card driver? I updated Catalyst earlier this week, should I re-install that?(Also I still have the older build of Omega drivers extra software, because I tried to use Omega but my PSU couldn't handle it on this computer.)

Ok, I reinstalled the video driver, so I'll update if it fixes anything when I have a chance to test it out again.

So, I reinstalled my video drivers and the system still crashed, but with a slightly different error check.

This time the BSOD readout was:
    Stop: 0x0000008E (0x00000005, 0xE534a306, 0xA89378EC, 0x00000000

    and the diagnostic report was:
    BugCheck 1000008E, {c0000005, e534a306, a89378ec, 0}

***** Kernel symbols are WRONG. Please fix symbols to do analysis.

    Probably caused by : ati3duag.dll ( ati3duag+10ae05 )

So yeah, still messing up even with a reinstalled Driver and Catalyst suite of everything, and an update of Directx :(

I would try reseating the memory. :P Then try moving the memory to different slots, even if it's just to eliminate them being an issue. (I had one game failing on a computer, turns out the memory slots were going bad. :P)

Oi. That's no fun on this computer :P I'll try it when I get home whenever the hell that finally is. Thanks.

Hey before I take apart the computer, if the RAM were unseated, or the sticks were bad, or the computer were about to blow up, would I still be able to run other games and see the full 2 gigs on my "system" info when I checked? I would think it would have more of an effect than just one game crashing. Also Ep 1 gave me:
"Internal Driver Error in IDirect3DDevice9:: Present()"

As an error without restarting, even after I redid all my video card drivers and directx, and ran the DXDiag and had all tests report perfectly.

    Hmm. Nuke it from orbit?

I'm assuming you've already tried reinstalling? x_x That's the last option I got, besides updating them from Steam.

I've been having trouble, too -- figure I won't bother spamming another "HELP me play Portal :(" thread and post my problem in here.

Portal runs, but terribly, and often drops to single digit FPS (especially when there are a lot of shaders around, it seems like.) and is basically unplayable.

    Athlon 62 X2 4800+, ASUS A2M-E motherboard, 2GB DDR2 RAM, GeForce6800 XT, Vista 32-bit.

Haven't tried other Steam games much, but I did load up vanilla HL2 for a bit and it seemed to go OK enough (I'll have to check it some more). Also, World of Warcraft always ran fine, as far as I know. Tried updating drivers, even beta drivers, but no luck. Also, tried turning off all the random Aero and hard-drive indexing crap in Vista, nothing.

I also tried running the game with -dxlevel 81 on the command line, which at least made it playable, but nowhere near what it should be. :(

Runs fine on my home computer, though, which is half as powerful -- go figure :P
