Basically, I'm now considering buying one. I know these things are region free.
Japanese Price: 39,980.00 JPY - £169
British Price: £299
This is for that new fangled stripped down 40gb model. Now I have a friend who works in a game store meaning I can get 10% off the £299 price to bring it down to around £270.
I'm ignoring bundles and such as honestly I'm not interested right now. I may pick up Sigma or Eye of Judgement at some point but basically I'm looking to get the machine for Blu Ray and the future (MGS, FF) more than anything.
At the same time I kind of want the 60gb model, as I filled up my 360's 20gb awful quickly, and that's without full-game downloads like Warhawk. However I'm not sure if new Japanese 60gb models come with the DualShock3, which is another thing next to the price that sways me to the Japanese model - cheaper, and better.
But! A new challenger enters! Preowned machines! My mate who's working in the game shop tells me they've got plenty of preowned PS3s in mint condition traded in by people who were disappointed with the system soon after launch. These retail at £325, but because of the free stuff coming with the retail model (free controller + 3 games) for the £425, nobody's been buying them.
However, tomorrow, the 60gb model drops to £350, and likewise this preowned model should drop - £275 or £250 is his estimate, with a further 10% off that.
So.. how does this all add up? What languages can I view and select on a Japanese PS3? If it doesn't have english and if I'm stuck on the Japanese network it's not as useful to me. Do new Japanese 60gb models come with the DualShock? Would I be likely to get hit with nasty customs charges?
In short.. uh.. help. Thanks.

The Japanese 40gb does, when it hits.

I stand corrected.
Well, I've heard the PS3 games are region-free, but that does not apply to Blu-Ray movies and PS1/PS2 games (which, come to think of it, won't work on the 40GB model anyway). Your call, really. What games are you buying it for?
If they find out what's in the box, you probably could.
My only concern for you would be the warranty. Sure, you can get the PS3 from Japan, but if something goes wrong, you won't be able to collect on your warranty.

40GB hits UK today/tomorrow (Wednesday 10th), so it isn't. Sucks. May just go for the preowned 60gb, which comes with a 1 year warranty anyway.

This is what id do. Youd be able to switch the japanese model to english mode (as far as i know), and youd be able to access the english store by creating an profile with "england" or "US" selected as your country, but you wouldnt be able to play english blu-ray movies. Youd be able to play US blu-ray movies, since japan and the US are the same region in the new blu-ray guidelines, but you wouldnt be able to watch your local releases.
