I want to build a new pc, but I want to do something a little different. I'm planning on actually building several computers, because I just inherited a large stack of parts and older (PIII) systems.
Basically, I want to make a computer than runs as cool and as silent as possible. To do this I'm thinking of putting a lot of parts out of the case. Like the graphics card, which has it's own fan for example, can go in a custom built housing with fan vents and sit outside the case. As can the hard drive. Here's my question....
1) Do they make pci-e and sata extension cables?
2) What kind of lag would I be looking at?
3) What's a good fanless mobo/processor combo? Without a lot of the internals I don't see a need to have a fan since the heat shouldn't be as big of a problem.
4) I'm thinking of building all of the compontents into a desk, with slots in the back, so it can be upgraded every few years. I usually stick everything to the back of my desk anyway (router, modem, etc, with velcro) and I keep the dvd drive external under the desk, beside the keyboard tray, so I figure why not do that for the hard drive, video card, and mobo.
Is this just a horrible idea? I know I can build the stuff I need, I just don't want horrible latency between components.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, I'm an IT technician, so I know my way around a pc build. I guess I'm just bored slapping together the usual systems every single time and I want to try something different. I just need to know if it's going to be worth the cost, which it won't if the damn thing is going to lag out constantly.
