PAX Silo

emlprimeemlprime Registered User new member
edited October 2007 in Debate and/or Discourse
Honestly, how many users/readers of Penny Arcade are there? $1.5 million for a missile silo? I don't see how we can afford NOT to purchase this silo as a community and hold it in common both to hold safe Mike and Jerry (and families of course) against the threat of nuclear war and also to host PAX in a facility described as
Below ground is a huge complex consisting of 16 buildings and thousands of feet of connecting tunnels.

Just imagine the echoes.

If even 30,000 of us were willing to contribute $50 ( I know I would) we could buy it outright. We could use one of the buildings to house ChildsPlay donations.

when this topic was brought up a few weeks ago a couple good points were made:

these missle silos have been TRASHED. Vandalized to the extreme. The repair costs alone would be huge, and then there is upkeep and utilities.

imagine if they actually decided to build the Olympus arcade

    20070223.jpg

    underground.

it would have to be named more like Hades or somesuch hell-related persona, but it would still be epic.

so... 1.5 mil for the silo and it's bases.

I'm thinking it would cost around another 1.5 mil to knock down the trashed silo's and refurbish.

So around 3 mil between 30,000 people, it's 50 bucks each.

    what?!

    1500000/30000 is 50!

The actual hallways and outrooms are all preserved aren't they?

The cost of knocking down the actual silo's can't be much can it?

You work in defence, what would the construction costs be here then?

I have no idea about construction costs, really. If a defense contractor is doing it, estimate about ten times the cost and twenty times the timeframe of what it really takes.

Wouldn't you need specialists to come in and test radiation levels and safety features and such. Seeing as it was a missile silo and all?

But what if we offered a Seabee battalion or some civil engineer corps peoples the same amount plus an increasingly larger amount of alcohol the sooner they finish?

This means it would get finished under cost and time but won't be fit for human habitation. Hell, mice will have a rough time with it.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about being stuck in a missile base with 30,000 nerds after a nuclear apocalypse.

Not that I have anything against nerds. It's just that it's quite unlikely such a society would florish, much less survive. Hell, if H/A is any indication, nobody would ever ask people they like out. They would just make threads asking how. By the time someone figured out the magic formula for making people you like fall in love with you, it would be too late; we would be too old to have any babies, and our society would collapse.

Besides, combine this with overall lack of personal hygiene and social skills, and I doubt it would be the utopia people believe it would be. More like a dystopia maybe. :)

Google is failing me, but there was a History or Discovery channel piece on a guy that bought a missile silo and coverted it to a dwelling. Pretty sure it was a Minuteman Silo though, which was smaller and usually only a single silo and control facility, versus the Titan trio that this is. Still, it isn't out of the realm of possibility of refurbishing it.

Ive been on a 4 million and an 8.5 million project as a Project Engineer/Assistant Project manager, and my former company just did the remodel at Dolphin Stadium. I'm going with just ballpark of 4.5 million to refurbish and rebuild Electric/Plumbing/HVAC on something that size.....of course, Florida is an inflated market so it could be less or more depending on the local availability of contractors and their demand. 7 million would easily make this an Olympus....but if you wanted PAX there, you are talikg a MUCH bigger investment. Plumbing and HVAC alone for that many people would take a complete redesign/build of the structure. I mean, even when it was brand spanking new it had 100 people in it, tops.

Don't worry about protecting me. I may have re-registered yesterday, but I've been here for a while. I built the PAXsassins website last year.

I'm surprised the post actually got this much response, but I love the idea.

One thing I think responders are failing to consider is that because this place wouldn't be a private residence (assuming the real estate agency isn't selling a non-habitable piece of real estate), the cost isn't one way. We wouldn't be sinking 1.5-3 mil in a one way venture. We'd be a co-op reaping the benefits of having the most awesome mecca for geeks imaginable. We could host every Con there you can imagine. Obviously PAX gets a discount.

Considering the crowd we hope to draw, I'd almost *hope* that there was some level of radiation. We could charge extra for a 5 minute pass to the "green room" where pre-pubescent males go to absorb their favorite arbitrary property from something they're holding. They could take in a bucket of sand, a spider, a bullet. I suspect certain posters might show up with a 10" ceramic wang, but who am i to judge.

Obviously if we did it, it would be beyond the scope of this forum. Though if we put up a website for pedges, it would get hit by PA, PVPOnline, SlashDot and Digg, so the audience would be bigger than 30K.

I was waiting till an actual civil engineer posted! (Getting my diploma in '09)

The other thing to consider here is that if buying a missile silo and remodeling it was nearly as profitable a venture as you guys make it sound, someone would have done it already. Someone like MGM Mirage, who are building CityCenter in Las Vegas, whose construction "trailer" building, which will be torn down after the first construction phase, costs $40 million. It has a goddamned executive limo entrance.
