Okay, heres how it is for me: In the many years since I started shaving my facial hair, I have always done it one way: With an electric shaver, everything off. I had no interest in growing anything, no interest in learning anything more complicated than "turn the machine on, buzz it all off."
However, I recently decided to let the beard grow out a little bit. Just a bit of stubble, nothing crazy or anything. However now I realize I've got a problem: I know jack about shaving. Like, absolutely nothing at all. Its one of those things I've just ignored. Up until now I've just cleared it all off. So like...how do I maintain it? Like keep it short-ish without shaving it all off? Is that even possible? And what would I use to do it with?
So basically, assume I know absolutely nothing. Any explanations or advice would be appreciated. This is REALLY something I ought to know by now.
Theres not much to know here, it depends on what you want and what you can grow.
When I kept a beard, I used the electric trimmers. The best thing is to get a nice set with a lot of different attachments and just work your way downward until you like what you see.
Other then that I usually clean up the edges on the bottom by using my jaw line as a reference point, having a lot of hair beyond your jawline just looks sloppy (usually). Right now I have a half goatee thing going on which is relatively easy to maintain as I just shave everything but my chin and maybe a 1/4" around it.
Other then that all I can say is just experiment, its just a beard and if you don't like what you see shave it all off and grow another one.

lol.
There are different settings/machines for different levels of uh, smoothness. And of course you choose where you press the thing to your face.
