is there any real point in comparing the gHZ ratings of a Pentium 4 and a Core 2 Duo?

I have a 1.4GHz Pentium 4 now, and my new computer will have a 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo...it doesn't SOUND like that much more, but I assume that it is...

Firstly if the other one was single core that's a 35% increase, that's a shitload.

    Also.

    The Duo means two.

    Compare this to one.

While it doesn't exactly scale up like that, the second processor does deliver a significant increase.

Yeah, it was a good old standard Pentium 4. Bought the computer back in 2001.

To avoid making a new thread..

    old system: P4 1.4ghz, 1gb SDR-133RAM, crappy mobo, Radeon 9250.

    new system: Core 2 Duo 2.13ghz, 2gb DDR2-667 RAM (Kingston), 8600GT.

What do you plan on doing with this system?

The 8600gt will handle most gaming (all steam games at good settings, games like bioshock etc at med).
Really you are going from a bicycle to a motorbike, the performance increase you see will be HUGE.

    Yay :D

primarily I want to see what WoW looks like a maximum settings on a smooth framerate. Right now everything is on minimum and the only time I get a smooth framerate (ie, greater than 20-25fps) is when I'm mounted, running across a featureless area like Tanaris and not doing much. In Shattrath I never get better than 5 fps.

But I also want to buy new games and have them run. The last new game I bought was Max Payne 2. :(

    No.

A 2.0 GHZ or less C2D beats the pants off a P4 3.8 or so

I thought that might be the case. I just wasn't sure exactly how much by. Last time I was seriously into hardware was back when the PC Powerplay Beast had an Athlon 4000+ and a 9800 Pro, from memory.

they're only really comparable ratings now within that line of products. ie, a 2.0 C2D vs a 3.0

Well, I got the new PC.

And I'd just like to say..

    FUCKYEAH.

Running WoW at MAX settings and getting a steady 30FPS is what dreams are made of.

Now i need to buy some high end games.

I have a 8600GT in my laptop, similar RAM, and a T7500. The only game I've had problems running is Supreme Commander, and I refused to play it at less than 1400x900. I play everything on Steam and most of my older games at 1680x1050.

Did I mention I was running eleven msn windows, six firefox windows, virus scanning and defragging at the same time as playing the aforementioned 30FPS Max-settings WoW?

This is a new world for me.

Stuff like virus scanning and defragging is just going to chew on the hard drive. They don't really care about your processor.

what exactly does all that pattern matching then? the NIC?

When I pop open eclipse, virusscanner consumes 50% of my processor for about 10 seconds as it scans the billions of files that are my java projects.

Okay, yeah, they'll use it, but they'll ALSO be thrashing the hard drive. Nobody uses a file scanning/arranging program to benchmark a CPU.

I've got better RAM than you I think though it's still 2 gigs, but other than that exactly the same, and I can run Bioshock beautifully at max settings

I actually just got my new comp the other day(a day so awesome, I bet you can't wait)my first upgrade since 2002(going from a 16 inch CRT to a 19 inch flatscreen, and I had a Pentium TWO or some crap)besides the occasional new video card, and I just about poo'd myself

Then I realized it wasn't a cutscene and did poo myself

    Note: At 1400x900

This can't be right, the 8800 is only a few months old, and the 8600s are still relatively new... and you're saying that it will only be able to run newer games at medium settings?

I can run almost any game on medium/high settings on a 4200 I can't imagine the 8600 is not any more advanced than that.

Unless I'm just way off and crazy. Or Bioshock is absurdly more of a system hog than I think/remember. Or there's anti-aliasing in there, which gets less necessary as the resolution increases anyways, so I normally forget about it.

I don't have the game, but I was running the demo on low/medium settings.

Khavall: To be specific, I have exactly his video card and I can max out Bioshock

The 8600 GT is 256 mb, and I think the 8600GTS is...320? I have the GT. I couldn't imagine the GTS being incapable of any current games

I MIGHT have anti-aliasing off, but whatever

Maybe, but put it this way.

When my old computer was defragging or virus scanning, it was unusable.

For ANYTHING. Not even internet browsing or MSN.

Let alone running WoW at max settings.

And OH GOD THE ALT TABBING GOODNESS.

On my old PC, if I hit alt-tab, it would take approximately 30 seconds to alt tab out.
And a further 30 to ALT TAB back in. This is still WoW we're discussing.

last night I was grinding in the Bone Wastes, and every time I needed to drink, I alt-tabbed out and read these forums.

Instant alt-tabbing. It was like alt-tabbing from a word document to Firefox.

My mum picked it up yesterday. The cool thing was, that Netplus called me at about 10am while I was at work saying "your computer is ready for pickup", so I instantly called my mum (cos I don't finish work until 1/2 hour after Netlpus closes, and I start 1/2hour before they open) and said "hey can you pick it up today?"

    she said "sorry, no."

    "thursday? friday?"

"sorry you'll have to wait until saturday"

    "nooo kersplat *head asplodes*...ok" *cries*

Then at about 3pm, 5 hours later, she calls me and said "I just picked up your computer".

    I was like.

    : D

Took me about 7 hours to transfer everything I wanted from my old PC to the new one.

I transferred the WoW folder, among those things. Saved me having to a) reinstall WoW b) reinstall Burning Crusade c) re-patch d) set up my UI again

    Go me.
