Ethical Wills - What values will you pass on to the next generation?
An ethical will is a good-bye letter that sums up your life's aims. You write this will in order to pass on your values instead of your valuables. It is not legally binding. It is not a living will, either, which is no more than an final care directive. An ethical will, instead, is closer to advice. It is a re-statement of the lessons you learned in life.
...
When you die you'll leave behind a long trail of textual bits scattered over the world (or all over this forum - F), but what you should leave is a distilled succinct package, a one-page, 5-minute testimony of you being you, so that if the rest of your recorded self should disappear, at least we'll know what you thought was important. And I can promise you this, you'll learn something doing it.
I guess you could also call this a personal philosophy, or manifesto. I'll post mine later (or maybe tomorrow if I have time)... but in the meantime, what would your ethical will look like?
every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.
I'd probably try to keep it simple and short... but some basic stuff is my argument about skepticism and dogmatism, and the primacy of suffering and joy where our ethical intuitions are concerned.

I would pass on that sex is a beautiful thing, a shared pleasure, not a sin, no matter what ANYONE says.
I will reveal that I am really alive and that my death was a hoax to see which family members got all uppity about my inheritance.
A few moments later I will say that I was just kidding and am really dead. I will then go on to explain the importance of having a good sense of humor.

so much of the time, the points I try to get across to people run along the lines of "relax".
so that's be my basis. It's life. It's just life. relax. love and relax. avoid anger, and more importantly don't let it be the core of any of your actions.
The golden rule is almost painfully perfect as a guideline for life, so I'd throw that down.
stress general importance of communication as well as knowledge and art/creativity. I don't quite live this way, but I recently heard someone say that you should create something every day. I think it was a painter. whatever. it's a great great ideal to live by, though I'm straying from ethics here, I'd still write that down.
I have lots of stuff non-ethical that I'd get into but it's not really important for this topic.
relaxation (not like kicking back, but keeping an open mind and open heart) + communication.

"if someone is cruel to animals it is perfectly acceptable to brutally murder them"
sounds cold-hearted, and I've mentioned this a lot, but I heard about a gang of 8-10 year olds who cornered a kitten and tortured it to death. If I had been there witnessing it, I don't know if I could have stopped myself from seriously harming or killing them.

so your reaction to an extreme situation is what you want to pass on as your legacy?

point taken.
but then again, in an ideal world no one would get in trouble for doing something like that, so perhaps that could be part of my legacy.
"Honesty is always the best policy" is a load of bullshit. People who are honest are not paragons of virtue; in general, they're just enormous douchebags, using "honesty" as an excuse.

oh god yes I agree with this. People who say "hey, I'm just being honest" usually say it immediately following a torrent of brutal, unnecessary criticism.
Its just as bad as "no offence intended, but...*Offensive statement*"
A better phrasing for it would be "Try not to lie".
Because there are circumstances where it is ok to "lie".
If my girlfriend says to me "does this dress make me look fat?", and it DOES, the correct answer is not Yes. Nor is it "no". The correct answer is, "you know, I only just realised how beautiful you look." completely unrelated, and hardly honest, but its certainly the most pleasing answer.
Perhaps it's better to say "Don't harm anybody by lying", though I think telling the truth as a default is preferable because it's good to be considered trustworthy.
How else are you going to betray them and take their stuff?
As for me, I'll likely leave as much good advice as I will money: none. It'll probably just be inconsequential but useful tips about life, such as "learn to accept it when you're wrong, because you frequently will be".

But I don't mind, as long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine,
I'll be fine, just give me a minute, a man's got a limit, I can't get a life if my heart's not in it.
"Society can blame all it wants on how Japan warps peoples minds, but when you see the first time a kid becomes the Otaku by buying that one figure, you realize how little you should care for the opinions of religious bloated fools, self-rightious bags who do nothing but wish that their way of life was the way it goes and nay-says who will berate you no matter what.
By buying that one figure, by the expression on his/her face as he looks at the figure, you realize that all is right in the work and nothign bad can come of this. So fear not to become Otaku's and engage others to join in on the fun. The happiness, the laughter, the sadness and the anger all make like better as you have fun with your friends who share the same things. So enjoy life, live life to the fullest and forget what society says. Society will crumble, but Man will always be there."
I think the easiest way to devise a consist moral system is "always value others". I was going to say "other people", but there are animals more deserving than some people I know.
Just be considerate in general, and you'll always know the right choice.
I have a much more formal and complicated ethical system, but it wouldn't be as snappy an epitaph.
One of my favorite Modest Mouse songs has the lines
It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember we're alive

It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember we're alive
For the last time
It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember to live
Before you die
Just being alive is so strange in itself, take it and run with it. Climb fences. Get mud on your pants. Ignore "No Trespassing" signs. Take trains to random destinations. Talk to strangers. Go on adventures. If none present themselves, make your own.

I think thats pretty nice.
Apart from the whole "other people aren't real and if they ever question anything you do they're just assholes who still aren't real" message, sure. Because that part's not nice at all so much as it's advising people to be collosal pricks. Letting a single hobby rule your life is like smoking a carton of Marlboro reds a day for your soul.
Actually, that last line is another ideal I'd like to pass on. Letting any single hobby rule your life is like smoking a carton a day for your soul. Whether it be anime, cars, videogames, comic-books, cocaine or whatever.
