So I just got a '98 Volkswagen Cabrio, and it's wonderful - the only flaw being that the vinyl soft top is 10 years old and deteriorating. It already has a big rip in it that the previous owner patched (it looks like he coated some sort of plastic glue over the whole thing), and I apparently just made another rip tonight (maybe folding the top up and down in 45 degree weather did it, hell if I know). The patch job the other guy did is watertight, and I'm looking to do the same thing. It'll be a fix that needs to last until spring, when I'm getting a new top. What's an easy way to patch the rip?
It's only in the top vinyl layer, not the entire top.

You should be able to find a vinyl top patch kit at any auto parts store. Just ask someone when you goto one and they can probably lead you right to them.
