Kitten smells like ass

So I just adopted a baby kitten. He's adorable. All grey, 5 weeks old.

Problem is he smells like ass. He farts a lot and doesn't clean his butt. I have to wet a tissue and wipe his ass (much to his dismay) just so he doesn't constantly stink up the place. The doctor said he is mildy distended, so I suspect when he is on a more regular diet it won't be as much of a problem. We've only had him for 24 hours and he is eating and even using the litter box now.

Any thoughts on how to stop my cat smelling like ass in the mean time?

    Febreze?

No really, don't do that, but perhaps you could find some kitty friendly disinfectant?

Does his fur smell or is it the cat farting all the time that smells?

Five weeks old is really young. He probably hasn't learned how to clean himself thoroughly yet. I got my kittens at seven weeks and not only would they have trouble cleaning themselves, but they also had some trouble "aiming" in the litterbox and would end up stepping in their poop or peeing on their feet. (On a sidenote, a "digestible" kitty litter like pine- or corn-based is a good idea for small kittens, because they will end up ingesting litter when they groom it off their feet. The clumping clay stuff can cause blockages.)

I never found a solution, other than wiping the kittens down with a damp washcloth. They outgrew the problem on their own.

The kind of food they eat could also contribute to super-stinky poop. My kittens started on Science Diet and their poop was horrible. I switched them to Natural Balance, and later to Kirkland's (Costco's brand) and it became much less stinky.

I had a similar problem with the last cat I adopted. Turned out he had some sort of a GI infection. Had to give him medicine for 10 days and it stopped mostly. Little guy farted like a pro before that. Constant stream of gas basically.

The other thing that helped was getting him neutered. The smell from his urine was absofuckinglutely awful but after neutering it got normal.

I'm laughing because he farted as I held him up. It's disgusting and adorable.

You can get "pet wipes" that are kind of like baby-wipes but they're moist cloth towels that come in a box and smell semi-nice. They're designed so you can wipe off your pet to help clean them. Your kitten also probably has worms, so you should see a vet soonish. Most cats/dogs end out with worms if they aren't treated as it's contracted by ingesting infected fleas.

Six weeks is too young in my opinion, be sure to show the kitten a ton of attention or it will never socialize properly and it will probably play-bite you a lot. The stink is because cats are usually cleaned by the mother for the first 7-12 weeks of their lives.

we took it to the vet before we brought it home, he said he doesn't have worms but as you read is mildly distended

it may be too young but they were left in the cold(er) outside a building by their mom...we're taking him so he doesn't die

Those are the pet wipes we had to use (and still do once in a while) on our cats. They get litter in their tails or a chunk of poop doesn't come all the way out and sticks in the fur, etc. Rather than let them gnaw on it for a day to get it off, we just give em a scrub. They don't seem to enjoy it, but they don't mind either.

Whenever you get a young cat, it is going to take a minute to learn how to clean itself. It'll learn eventually. In the meantime, we gave our cat bathes and that seemed to help.

Cats lick the shit off of their anuses? D::...:

You learn something new every day.

P.S., to see the picture, copy the URL into your address bar, press enter, and then click either "open" or "save" for the window that pops up. It's a .tiff file so it doesnt show up regularly on a webpage, I believe.

Huge truth. When I switched brand (real food from a pet store instead of that generic roadkill crap they have at regular stores) it went from "OK, hold your breath while you go take a dump" to "not noticable as long as I keep up with cleaning the box".

Science Diet is so stinky, seconding that post.

My cats have zero gas these days with Royal Canin and Innova. I am trying to wean them onto the Innova (and making sure its not a stinky-poop-brand) but they are pretty fond of Royal Canin. It's not the best but it works, they have lovely coats and are nice and soft and always have plenty of energy.

The boy gets wet food every second day as a treat, but it stinks him up pretty good so be aware :D

Also make sure the kitten isn't getting into the garbage or eating stuff off the floor or out of your dirty dishes but since you've only had the little guy 24 hours I'd say give it at LEAST a week for him to clear up the gas.

In terms of wiping his butt, yep, he's tiny, keep doing it like mommy would and make sure he gets praise if he shows interest in cleaning himself.

This thread needs more pics so here's mine :

    Hey Guys,

I have a somewhat less stinky cat based problem and rather than start a whole new thread i thought i would just post here :)

We adopted a cat yesterday morning and brought her home - Shes approx 1 year old but not exactly sure.

She's settled in remarkably well so far with a few play sessions and a few cute lap sleeping session.

    Except.

Since 10:30 am yesterday she has neither used the litterbox or drunk any water. The first is my major concern. She has poked/clawed around the litter box and dumped the majority of the litter on the floor. But she hasn't gone. I've checked around and there are no little surprises anywhere either - is this normal?

As far as the water thing goes, her water bowl is next to her food bowl and she has eaten a little, (we've given her meat and dry and she appears to have only eaten the meat) so im confident that she knows where the water is.

Otherwise shes a perfect little kitty

It is usual for new cats to take some time to eat and drink, but all cats can go downhill quite quickly if they get dehydrated or hungry. If she's not eating much, she won't be using the litter much.

There are a few things that you can try out:

    1. If you microwave up some stinky canned wet food so its just a tad bit warm, the cat will be able to smell it easily and might chow down. Cats can get some moisture from wet food (although its not great for their teeth if its their only diet).

    2. Depending on where you got the cat from and it's history, it might prefer filtered water, running water or something else crazy. I don't suggest that you give in to that long term, but in the short term, see if the cat will drink out of a running tap, the toilet or filtered water out of a bottle. Some cats even drink out of their owners glasses when left on the coffee table O_o (Unless you know the previous owners didn't do all this). Once you have the cat hydrated you can work on getting it out of these habits!!

You can also wet down dry or even add water to wet food as well to try and increase the moisture the cat is taking in.

When the cat is actually eating and drinking a bit more, the litterbox thing shouldn't be too hard. Most cats know where it is and what it's for. They only go outside it when they are sick, it's dirty or they have other behavior issues.

After witnessing a good eat/drink, you can take the cat to the litter every hour and praise if it goes. Don't be afraid to dig around in the litter yourself to set an example. Keep an eye on the cat if you can and watch out for it squatting on soft things like the couch or a pile of clothes.

I had one idiot moment with a cat where she wanted to start going on the couch after using the box fine for weeks. Just had to grab her and lock her in the bathroom with the box once, and she was fine from then on out. Cats operate a lot by smell so on the off chance you find a nasty surprise, take it and leave it in the litter box (no punishment, it'll just force the cat to try and hide their business) so they can smell that this is where they should be going and things should be ok from there on.

EDIT: If the cat goes another day and you are positive it's not sneaking eats/drinks when you aren't looking you may have to check out with a vet. Symptoms of dehydration to look out for are lethargy, dry gums and bad elasticity in the skin (check for this by grasping the skin at the back of the neck and pulling up - the cat will likely allow you to do this it's how their moms pick them up and carry them around. If the skin springs back, its fine, if it kinda creeps back down like honey, cat is dehydrated). Cats will sneak drinks when you aren't looking. You can put ice cubes in the water dish too, that sometimes will get them interested.
