Problems with video playback

This is an annoying problem that has starting occuring with videos in half-life and steam distributed things. A video starts playing, sound is fine, but the video is black, with occasional red and blue splotches of the image going on. This happened during the final movie of HL2: episode one, and when trying to watch the video of the demoman on steam. And in fact, even using regular media players I'm getting the same junk (VLC, Zoom player, WMP); but watching embedded videos on sites like youtube hasn't been a problem.
I've heard it has something to do with OpenGL or Direct3D settings, but I'm clueless. I jsut want to watch videos again T_T
