Firefox is acting up

For some reason, every time I click something that should just re-direct me, it opens a new window. Does anyone know how to fix this? Also, how do I transfer my favorites from IE?

When you open Firefox for the first time it should give you an option for Importing from IE.

I don't know how to do it beyond that. I'll mess around in the options when I get home. No firefox at work.

And as for the redirecting...are you sure it does it on everything? Try going into options and into Tabbed browsing and selecting open new sites in new Tab.

But again, I'll have a dig round in the options whe nI get home.

    Okay WTF!?

I scanned my computer and some stuff was infected. As soon as I deleted them, everything started working again. So this case is solved!

    Why not?

With proper backups, reformatting takes an hour or two at most, if everything goes smoothly.

Of course, things do not always go smoothly, but them's the breaks.

And hell if you really want it to be painless, pay some computer shop $100 and they'll backup, format and reinstall everything you ask them to.

On the other hand, while reformatting is great to do and all, this thing didn't sound too tough. I doubt its roots are/were very deep. Unless there's more problems in the near future, skip the format, but back everything important up now. You can always reformat later if things do asplode.

uh, no. i've worked long enough in IT support to know that this is horrible advice.

any infection, no matter how minor, is evidence that your computer has been compromised. i wouldn't trust that system as far as i could throw it. initial "benign" infections can and probably have left security holes in your system and/or nasty programs that can automatically download other viruses and compromising malware without you knowing.

back up your system and reformat it as soon as you can.

While his computer does indeed sound beyond his ability to repair, I wouldn't say any infection warrants a reformat. That's nonsense.

I know it might seem like overkill. I just don't like taking the chance of putting my personal information in a computer that I know was compromised at one point in time. I'd take a 1-2 format over having someone get my bank info or my SSN and having to deal with all that identity theft bs. Odds that this happen? Slim, but there is still a chance. Thats how I look at it anyway.

He's had multiple threads over the last little while related to spyware trouble. The PC was wide open for ages.

I agree, his comp definitely needs a wipe. I just wanted to refute that blanket statement.
