Good Study Music?

SueveSueve Registered User regular
edited October 2007 in Help / Advice Forum
I am trying to write a 6 page paper on Jungian psychology, and im finding it hard to do without good study music. My two good study songs (Tounge n' Groove by Steve Kimock Band, and Ocean by the John Butler Trio) are incredibly old sounding to me now.

So instead of just working in silence, I decided to call upon the forces of PA to help me find more good study music, so if you know any good songs, just post the Song Name, and the Artist.

Muchos Gracias.

I do ambient music when I study, Lemon Jelly, Thievery Corp., Royskopp, amon tobin and such. If thats not your thing, It may not work, but it has a beat to keep you up, but not enough lyrics to be distracting.

I study to classical music. Usually sky.fm is a good free internet radio that has their "mostly classical" channel available all the time without many interruptions and sounds good enough to help drown out distracting sounds while culturing you.

Anything by Massive Attack and Café Del Mar.

The Batman Begins soundtrack makes studying feel EPIC, but not in a heartpumping way.

The Homeworld games have fantastic ambient soundtracks, look into those.

In my opinion any music you've listened to a billion times should be good. That way your brain is so used to it it will fade into the background and you won't feel the need to listen to the lyrics etc, which is why 99% of the time when I'm studying I'm listening to Bolt Thrower because pretty much every song they've made is quite embedded in my brain and I hardly even notice it. Death metal might not sound like good studying music, but I don't think the genre matters so much as familiarity. I also keep it at really low volume, maybe that helps. Thats my take on it.

    For electronic stuff:

    BT - This Binary Universe
Mylo - Destroy Rock and Roll
Late Night Alumni - Empty Streets

I find that HalberdBlue's advice is pretty spot on, though. Familiarity and low volume is pretty good for zoning into your work. Hope this helps.

edit: yeah, mine are actually full albums, too

In addition to most of above:

This Will Destroy You: This Will Destroy You

Brian Eno: Ambient 1/Music for Airports or Ambient 2/The Plateaux of Mirror

    Eluvium: Copia

    M83: M83

Mum: Finally We are No One or Summer Make Good

    Any Blue States album

The Album Leaf: Into the Blue Again

    Sparklehorse: It's a Wonderful Life

Air: Premiers Symptomes or the Virgin Suicides soundtrack

    Dntel: Something Always Goes Wrong

    Slowdive: Souvlaki

Any The Books album although it's very hit or miss with people

The 28 Days Later soundtrack works a little.

That's all I got for now.

e: Oh I completely disregarded what the OP said. These are albums, not songs. Sorry.

In addition to some of the good suggestions of this post, I'm a pretty big fan of Animal Collective and Panda Bear as study music.

When it comes to me, I try to avoid anything fast paced (like: metal or rap). Just because with a fast beat I become more scatterbrained and take in less information.

I used to listen to videogame music while I studied. Mostly Final Fantasy VI and Crono Trigger.

For ambient stuff, I like Doof, Tristan, and Haujobb. Massive Attack, Sigur Ros, and Godspeed You Black Emperor are some of my favorite bands and those suggestions won't steer you wrong :)

I usually go into itunes and listen to the ambient radio station called "Limbik Frequencies." It's really smooth...good electronic background music. If I'm studying math, I usually listen to classical music. Then, when I take a test or something, I recall the music I was listening to and it sort of plays in the back of my mind, and it gets me in the math mode. Lately I've been listening to Mozart's Requiem every time I study math. It's a depressing collection of music, though, heh.

I listened to these albums all the time in college, and even now when I'm doing big projects at work:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchestral_Game_Concert

It's a 5 disc series of 5 concerts put on by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra in the early 90s by Koichi Sugiyama and Yoko Kanno where they fully orchestrated 70-some NES/SNES themes. The discs are all but extinct now, but I have it backed up in 4 or 5 places in case of the apocalypse. Makes for perfect study music if you can find it.

For some reason, 80's really helps me: Phil Collins, a-ha, Tears For Fears, Survivor, Journey, Genesis...

But I also like ambient music: Massive Attack, Zero 7, as well as some trance like Thievery Corporation.

I would say also to check out some good Down-Tempo. If you like just general beats, cool stuff to just nod your head to etc. I'm really digging this Saru CD I recently bought. Just what I was looking for.

"Music for Two" by Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer. Upright bass and banjo, two of the best players in the world, playing both original classical compositions and older pieces rewritten to be played by this duo. Amazing album, but also excellent study music. If you have the chance to snag the edition with the bonus DVD, definitely get it. Not great for studying, but a very enjoyable reward for a study session well done.
