I don't know about anyone else, but I love stand-up comedy for a huge number of reasons and in a number of guises.
Essentially this thread is for talking about which stand-ups you enjoy and why you enjoy them.
My favourite comedians include Bill Hicks, Ross Noble, Eddie Izzard, Dylan Moran, Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, (the little i've heard of Lenny Bruce) The 'Bottom Live' tours and other stage shows of Adrian Edmondson and Rick Mayall, if they even count as stand up, which i don't really think they do but love nonetheless.
Why stand-up? I think it's a very direct link between audience and performer, and can be an oddly moving experience.
I'm making this thread mainly because last night I saw the first ever comedy gig which was beamed via satellite to every Vue cinema in the UK, which was Ross Noble live in Liverpool. I highly suggest seeking out some Noble if you can. He's a Geordie (from Newcastle, or i think Northumberland more accurately) who doesn't really plan his shows so much as just goes out and talks in a very very funny manner for hours on end, talking about everything and nothing.
Normally I think i prefer more political stand-up, but stand-up an be a lot like music, in that every artist is different and ideally incomparable to any other.
Anyway, talk about stand-up here...

I'm not gonna lie to you, I love Mitch Hedberg, but I've never heard Jim Gaffigan. I will look him up when i have the time sir, and I apologise for not including Hedberg in the OP. I didn't even count all the comedians whose work I own in DVD format, but I still apologise for forgetting your one important comedian.
He's playing here tomorrow!

if you prefer political humor you will not like these guys so maybe just stick with your guys
Eddie Izzard
What other comedian makes jokes about the Trojan fucking War
Man I would love to beat the shit out of Andy Dick
Also anyone who hasn't seen the works of Bill Bailey or Ross Noble I seriously seriously suggest you try to see them. However, Americans might have some trouble with Ross Noble's quite northern accent, so maybe a DVD with subtitles might be a help :P :P
you are retarded
STEAM!
Seriously.
LOOK I AM LOUD AND ALSO POLITICAL
hahaha, I'm sorry, I've had a couple drinks so I didn't see Brian there. I don't just love political stuff, honestly I really just like funny, so I'll give them all a go

i haven't really been that in to stand up comedy since he died
i loved The Aristocrats though
He'll be in SD in early December which I'll hopefully be going to. I saw him last year in Chico and had a great time.
He's funny, but man when he is in a pissy mood he is fucking brutal.
VICTOR FUCKING BORGE!
That is one talented motherfucker, right there.
You're an idiot.
maybe if it weren't for the first god damn post, mister I'm So Fancy Because I Like Black People
No I mentioned him in the OP I believe sir, also I own at least one DVD featuring his standup work, the man was a genius.
Though this may be controversial, watch Pryor, then Bill Hicks, then check out Chris Rock, and tell me he doesn't come off as almost a combination of the two, when he is doing his more politically motivated stuff
EDIT: DAMN YOU Lord Dave for both your swift posting and great knowledge of comedians
