Game Crashes After Starting

Welp, I recently got the orange box, for the PC, but games like HL2 and anything of it, tend to crash a minute or two after being played, as in, my computer just shutsdown completely.
I dunno what causes it, thought it was overheating stucka fan next to it, didn't help, so I figure I'll be heading to the local computer places to see what's up.
But before that and paying for evaluations, can anyone tell me what they think might be wrong?
(This happens with other games too, but not WC3 or anything like it, only first person shooters so far. Well Mount n' Blade too though.")

Sticking a fan next to an overheating computer would be like trying to combat a flash flood with an 8 ounce cup >_>
