when I start my PC, I get an error message about 2 seconds into the boot process. The message: No keyboard present, press F1 to continue, or add a keyboard and restart. Then it skips the message and boots except the keyboard does not work. It started after my pc crashed defragging in safe mode. help.

Have you checked to make sure that the keyboard is securely plugged in?

Do you have an additional keyboard you can try?

USB ports can "burn out", so if it's plugged into a USB port, try a different USB port.

    EDIT: ps/2 port, nm

I had the same problem on an old file server that crashed. The mobo wouldn't recognize a keyboard. I tried to flash the bios and reset everything, but it still didn't work. I eventually chalked it up to a bad motherboard and/or ps2 port. I know that's not what you want to hear exactly, but it's just what happened with my similar situation.

See if you can get a working keyboard from a friend, or borrow one from the office.
Use a USB keyboard, or use a PS/2 keyboard with a USB adapter (easy to come by, I have like 10 of these in a drawer somewhere).
See if using a USB port in lieu of the PS/2 port solves your issue.

The USB keyboard should conceivably work if the problem is limited to the PS/2 port.
