What is the Code of Federal Regulations (in a nutshell)?
I'm applying for a job in the UK and part of it is to do with USTRANSCOM and the Code of Federal Regulations. I don't NEED to know about these for the job, training will be provided if I get it, but I have an interview and I'd like to seem somewhat knowledgable. I'm doing some research online, but every little helps, so if you're good at explaining things like this, please offer some assistance!
Like has already been mentioned, the CFRs are a set of rules for just about everything that is federally regulated. My only personal experience with them is in the maritime regulations sections. They tell you how frequently inspections must be carried out, what kinds of emergency equipment is required on various vessels, etc. They are also horribly convoluted and when dealing with actual book-bound copies will more often than not reference you to a different book instead of containing the answers you are looking for. If you ever end up having to deal with them, it is almost impossible to actually learn the contents of the CFRs, the thing you should focus on is learning how to navigate the index system so that you can actually find what you are looking for without scanning hundreds of pages.
Do you have any idea what CFR's you will be responsible for at all? Segments on the government, at least in the US, are responsible for some of the CFR's, rarely to never are they resopnsible for all of them in a single position or even a single department.
Are you responsible about import/export products and the regulations surrounding them? Maybe transport? Pesticides? Food additives? Product labeling requirements for drugs? etc.
Well, the only CFR that deals with transportation is 49 CFR, so knowing that might help. Feel free to look through them for general knowledge if you want, but it's not usually good reading material if you aren't applying it to anything you currently do.
Other useful things to know would come from the IMDG Code and IATA as far as transportation is concerned.

It's basically the rules set by the Federal Government for the various area it governs.
