Home Security Systems - Do it Yourself?

So I just got this house and I'd like to install a home security system. I had Protection One come out after reading good things online and give me free evaluation and it was about what I expected in terms of price. Monitoring would be $40/month since I don't have a landline in the house and I don't intend on getting one. I would have to sign a 3 year contract.

Then I called safemart.com and they offered me a similar system at the same price. The same type of monitoring would be $25/month and only a 1 year committment. The catch is that I would have to do it myself.

The $15/month isn't a big deal to me but I am very wary of signing 3 year contracts. That is a looong time. However, I don't know if I want to be responsible for installing and servicing the alarm myself. My question is has anyone ever installed a wireless alarm system in their house? Is it worth getting the 3 year contract?

If your unsure, I would recommend having a professional come out and do it. Depending on your states law, you may have to have some one with a License do the work.

Your homeowners insurance might require professional install as well for you to get security discount. Maybe call your agent, see if they can recomend a company, as that's a win for them (less chance of a claim).
