old timer turned lurker here. this is mostly what i've been composing for a portfolio thus far, as well as some very recent sketchbook stuff. comments/crits would be gladly accepted... i need as many views as i can get to perfect this (scholarship runs and all that) for application by february, so by all means, chime in. this is all stuff that i've done this semester, and sorry, its a crosspost from a different forum.

faces: (portraits of live models, observation)

the cowboy (still in prog, ear needing fixing):

the black guy:
deshawnfacena9.jpg

the old man: (for some reason, the camera angle distorted the image a good deal...)
grumpdf4.jpg

figures: (quick gestures that were massed)

the black guy:
deshawnbackve3.jpg

the white guy:

misc. anatomy self-studies:

my hands:
handstx8.jpg

my feet: (still in prog)
feetmu1.jpg

misc. pieces:

charcoal tryptic: (write-up below)
trypticscribbletv1.jpg

gouache tryptic:
trypticpaintnd2.jpg

sketchbook:

pg 1: (buddhist statue, giant space submarine)
buddhashipve0.jpg

pg 2: (space nun holding book, giant robot)
nunandrobord5.jpg

the tyrpic thing is a three segment piece that utilizes scribbles with no forethought into placement, line value, or size/quantity. from there, lines are chosen and from them, mass, light source, and environment/atmosphere are established, not necessarily in a concerted manner.

i've not taken pictures of any quick gestures i've done, but i can if it'll help diagnose any issues i have with basic form.

again, comments/crits are what i'm looking for. thanks

I'll leave the hard core criting to those who know what there doing more than me, but I would mention one thing that stands out to me. If I looked at this as a portfolio for any reason, I would see you clearly have a good grasp of how all the body parts work, but I don't see a single full figure showing you know how to draw a person with all the parts connected.

Your stuff looks pretty darn good to me :)

thanks, man. yeah, those sorts of pieces are tucked away in my gestures pile... along with a few various anatomy parts studies. the ones that i did kinda lack a dynamic to them that i was looking for in compiling my portfolio, namely... pieces that compliment each other, such as the two figures with their backs turned (compositionally they are similar) and the hands/feet. i'll take your words into consideration, though, and try and find some full body pieces that work together and put them in the portfolio.

You've got some pretty flashy rendering going on, but alot of the forms seem skewed, specially in the black guys face.

Good stuff overall, try to get some more color work in there.

    hi joshmunkey,
I kinda like the way how you draw the hand and feet. it looks alive.
I like the way how you do the shadow.

greatnation: it might also be the weirdness of the shot, as the paper was unsupported... regardless, i'll study facial form more and see if i can go back and improve that portrait a bit. thanks

vrempire: thanks man. in these sorts of simple form drawings i tend to focus on core shadows and variation of shadow as the form takes shape, so thats why an emphasis was put on shadow. thanks for the kind words!
