Max Payne movie to star Mark Wahlberg <noir thread>

20th Century Fox has signed Mark Wahlberg to star in Max Payne, a live-action adaptation of the bestselling Rockstar video game that will begin shooting early next year. John Moore will direct.

Variety says Wahlberg is negotiating to play the titular cop who is haunted by the tragic loss of his family and has little regard for rules as he investigates a series of mysterious murders. He finds himself up against an adversary bent on destroying Max and the streets he protects.

The script was written by Beau Thorne. Julie Yorn is producing through Firm Films, along with Scott Faye.

so i'm looking for some seriously noir books because of this, recent ones

i adore chandler and love macdonald, i've read the maltese falcon and altered carbon

so what's some New Noir that i would like?

I'm pretty optimistic about this. Max Payne had a fairly cinema-friendly plot, and Wahlberg really impressed me in The Departed. Maybe this will actually be good.

You should check out Bulldog Drummond. It's not new by any means. Sapper wrote a ton of novels about this detective. Very good reads.

well, they pretty much wrote max payne as a blood tragedy, so it should translate well

i'll watch the movie when it'll come out, but i don't know how well it'll do after hitman comes out

You could check out some of Greg Rucka's (the comic book writer dude) stuff, especially some of the Atticus Kodiak novels. Not strictly noir, but kinda has the same feel. Give him a chance, one of the few dudes to write Batman proper recently

As long as they keep Max's delivery exactly the same and maybe put some filters over the thing I'll be happy. I hope they don't feel the need to "re-imagine" the characters or story.

But I may give two shits about this one. Max Payne was excellent stuff.
