Depends really, what's in the rest of the laptop?

If just to choose between these two, I would go for the dual core centrino.

Intel's mobile chips are typically better than AMD's, both performance and energy-wise. Go for the Centrino, as long as it's a Core 2, not a Celeron.

I have heard a lot of people cry about their 8400M. How much would an upgrade to the 8600M cost? And how much does it matter to you. Today i was browsing a video card forum and people called it possibly the worst mobile card ever. I don't know how much truth is in those statements.

Then again all this only matters if you want to play new games.

I advice you to visit www.notebookreviews.com, sign up for their forums and post a thread in the "What notebook should I buy?" thread.
