PAX05: The Waiting

At first, I was weary of all the lines. But looking back, that was another fine example of us at our finest. Everyone lined up peacefully and interacted with those around them.

The DS was easily a major force behind this. Out of 7000 attendee's I'm going to wager that 2000 of them had DS's and were pictochatting or meteosing it up while waiting for the doors to open. If you tried pictochat before the final omegathon event started, those 4 rooms were FULL.

Every line I was in I met someone I would eventually see all weekend, and trade a head nod with while passing. The acknowledgement of time spent in the blazing sun on Friday, the shared experience of pointing and laughing at the rediculous posters on the side of the Maydenbauer center, the mutual frustration with the over-ractionary Ticket Window lady.

I gotta hand it to the people who waited patiently for thier console tourney to start. I think those minutes (hours) before the matches/races/heats actually got started bonded groups. And once those tourney's got started, everyone was on the ball. I managed 4 different Smash Bro's brackets and everyone was honest, forthcoming, sportsmanlike and willing to help out. From the dude in the gilligan hat to all you tourney peeps I helped out, you made my PAX.

I think as gamers we have been molded to wait. We deal with load screens all the time, or at least we used to back in the day, so we're uniquely equiped to handle that down time. Maybe that's why we spent that time wisely and interacted with people who could easily be couch-mates.

Good things came to those who waited.

Heh, you must have been standing pretty near me. That first time she came out she was just incredibly rude. It didn't even look to me like that place was OPEN.

Of course, it's pretty much a safe assumption that nothing in Bellevue is ever open, I suppose.

Man, I'm kinda gonna miss that place next year. I liked getting familiar with this random-ass area of a random-ass city.

I was one of the dumbasses waving people into the garage. Which side of the divide were YOU on?

I was trying to formulate an argument to the effect of "I'm not" but I couldn't.
    Good times.

Waiting in the line on friday wasnt all that bad, it was great when a guy pulled up asking what we were waiting for, and a couple people yelled "Judist Preist" or "Satan", and "Gay Pride". Then after 5seconds of silence, the guy was still pulled up in by the line, and one guy yelled "For your mom!". :D

Not enough people had PSPs :(

Next year I'm going to have to get a DS just to get some multiplayer action going.

I was really suprised at how many DS's there were, compared to how many PSP's I saw.

I've got to say, I was also pleased and impressed with just how many women attended PAX. It's just a divide in the hobby, it's good and refreshing to see a significant percentage of women show up to an event like this.

The lines were a complete waste of time. There wasn't a panel or concert you couldn't wander into after the line cleared out.

I had a slightly different experience... I showed up at 10-something on Friday and was easily in the first 100 people. By the time the line started moving there were probably 300-400 people ahead of me, and I just barely got a wristband. It was frustrating; I hoped most newcomers were going to a spot held by a friend, but I did see entire groups slowly cutting forward on the outside of the line.

The concert line that wrapped around 3 city blocks was something else, though. :)

Between having a friend that was an Omeganaut (thanks BeatByAGrrl!), her brother who was a Fauxmeganaut (thanks Ryan!), and forumers hooking me up, I only waited in two lines or so.

Thats really lame. I like to think the best of people espeically while waiting in line, but it sounds like you think people were abusing the generousity of people like us. Aw well, one thing to remember tho, is that once you get into the con, you forget that you ever waited.

Also, full size versions of all "WAITING IN LINE" pics please.
