So my girlfriend and I decided to take a "break" after a fight we got in this week, and I'm giving her some time to think (it's confusing). Anyway, that's not what I'm here for. My problem is that I was hoping to really focus on my college apps and other stuff this week, but now that this has happened, I'm afraid of getting too caught up in drama and freaking out over her and falling behind. She is really important to me and I hope we can work things out, but I'd really like to get some work done while she gets some time to herself. Anything I can do to concentrate?
Put on some music, nothing intrusive, and force yourself to start working.
Once you get into the swing of things it should be a lot easier.
Break ups or aftermaths of fights do always make things like work harder, especially if you're doing it alone and you're not out with people who depend on you to do your job and thus basically force you to do it, but once you're wrapped into a cocoon of work it at least alleviates the problems. Also, don't have any pictures of her or anything that reminds you of her around you when you work. If there's a picture of her sitting near your computer when you're working on it, you can bet that if you relax you're eyes for a second they'll find that picture and you'll be caught up in the feelings and bam then you're out of the tempo of work.
That's about as much as I can offer, since it's basically just a case of bad timing.
I would say a really good thing to do for the "break" is to write a letter. Not a gay sappy love letter- just one to let you know how you feel. The pros and cons of the relationship; just lay it all out on the table and give it to her. That way she knows what's going on in your head.
This should be a way to know that you've done your part of the break. And now the balls in her court. It may be a gay waiting time but it should ease your mindset and let you concentrate on the college apps. God knows how fun those are.
Essentially a frame of mind where you ignore everything else except the task you put before yourself. Mentally and physically don't do anything else except focus on whatever task you have. Once it is done move on to the next. Continue with this until you are finished or need an hour break or so. Then go back to work. If you find yourself day dreaming or thinking about her force yourself to ignore it.
Its kind of a mental gut check but you will get used to it. You will also find that this is a good skill to have because in school and life there will always be some sort of distraction and if you can work around them and through them you will be in a much better position than most of your peers.

Good luck
