Well, it's been directly confirmed that Eli and Alyx escaped the BMRF via the G-Man's intervention. The same might hold true for the others; if so, Blue Shift sort of throws a monkey wrench in that idea.

I did think that BS and OpFor were written by Laidlaw, but I can't find where I read that. At any rate, I don't hold them as canon (unless and until confirmed, heh). I do think they helped Valve while making HL2 - in BS (as in HL2), you are very fragile; in OpFor the whole squad mechanic really came to the fore.

I was playing E2 last night (Stupid gnome, you are in SPACE... or will be, once I get Neighborhood Watch; at any rate, I have the achievement), and during the Silo 2 sequence, two soldiers survived the Hunters and joined my squad. And then promptly vanished.

Shortly thereafter, I was playing around during Eli's Speech, and I left a couple of boxes in front of the door; when Magnusson walked through, he got .. stuck.. on one of the boxes, and died. I, idiotically, did not take a screenshot, nor could I reproduce the effect :( Oddly, it didn't end my game.

The first time I played through this game, it went very smoothly. After a couple patches, it's become almost unbearable - lots of slowdown, stuttering, interesting visual effects (technicolor rocks, anyone?); lots of tearing.

It'll play fine for a while, then for no obvious reason, start stuttering - if it were just the area, I'd expect it to be continous, but after it's done stuttering, it'll come back just fine. [edit] It also happens in the strangest places, like inside White Forest, after the big battle; I walk into the chopper room, and it grinds to a halt, HDD starts thrashing (which made me think the pagefile was goofing*), and finally starts working again.

    * when I disabled the page file, or set it to 'System managed size', I had a lot more video-related issues. During the Antlion Guard fight, these randomly colored wedges would appear, making it impossible to see anything - but only if I looked in just the right direction.

What's this? Opened up the pagefile options for the aforementioned tag, and just saw 'Total paging file size for all drivers: Min: 16 MB; Recommended: 1534 MB; Allocated: 1536 MB.

For the record, all the options are on their recommended levels.

Computer is... GeForce 6800GT, 1024 MB RAM, Windows XP Pro x64, AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+.

Is there a chance at all Valve or another modding group will mod Blue Shift and Opposing Force with the Source Engine? I'd pay for that.

Valve making them: Signs point to no, since Half-Life: Source wasn't even going to be a released project at first. Valve's primary motivation in making HL: Source was to see how easy it would be to take HL engine stuff and port it over to the source engine. Later they decided to release it as a freebie for Silver and Gold editions of HL2.

There's also the issue of Valve still being indecisive about whether or not to make the Gearbox-made stuff canon.

Goddamnit, why shouldn't it be canon?

Because Valve didn't make them. According to Marc Laidlaw, Valve gave them the basic story framework to make an addon, but Gearbox ultimately went for gameplay over sticking to the framework for stuff. (You'd have to ask Marc for specific examples, as I've never seen him give any)

It's only been confirmed that he had something to do with Alyx getting out of Black Mesa. Eli never mentions that the Gman in any way aided him in escaping; just his daughter.

Hm. Someone tried to 'hack' my account tonight by resetting the password or something nonsensical like that (got 2 reset password emails from Steam). It couldn't have been me since I haven't wandered into a Steam page in my browser in ages and Steam automatically logs me in at startup.

This made me think of something else: A couple weeks ago, Valve updated the Steam Community pages so that everyone could see what games you owned. Those users with a large number of games sure would make good targets to try and hack. :|

    1. Create free Steam account (if needed to see game lists, if not, skip)
    2. Hunt around for users (or create a script to do it for you?)

I saw three decently populated serves when I was playing. Two full and one half I think.

How many servers do you need? As long as there's one with good people and a good map rotation I don't get this "no one plays it anymore" mentality.

I have a new problem. Valve finally got around to releasing a new patch for Overlord, but the problem is that the new patch is not being downloaded at all. Whenever I try to open Overlord, I'm always getting an error saying that the Steam servers are either too busy to handle my request or that none of the Steam content servers have been modified to upload the content for Overlord.

I've tried everything from deleting the game's local content (which made it worse as it now won't download the game) to restarting steam but still there is no solution. Is this happening to anyone else and if not does anyone know of anyway to solve it? Btw, it's been happening since last night.

I would try the Steam forums but I just registered and as you know you have to be Mod approved before you can post there.

...and after trying it, I like it a lot. I'm surprised I didn't see it on this list.

It's also a RTS/FPS hybrid, like Natural Selection, but with vehicles. I assume other mods have done that, too, but not any that I had played.

I haven't tried any vehicles but I've had had plently of fun with that mod. It's amazing if both teams have good commanders.

The only problem is when either commander doesn't know what to do (which is a bit of a problem since there is no way to know what to do but to actually go ahead and do it. There should be a tutorial) or if you run into grieffers (ran into a couple the other day, completely destroyed the game. Then again that happens in any online game, really).

Other than that it's pretty damn fun, all clases have their uses. Also, join a squad as soon as you can because it gives you a free first skill.

You might as well go and give it a spin. Like Drovek said, it can be real fun if the commanders know what to do, and your teammates actually contribute/listen.

The vehicles are kind of a toss-up for me. While I do like them, they don't handle as well as BF2 vehicles did, but I don't have to wait an eternity for them. The plus side for vehicles is, basically, that you can make and customize them. You spend points for different weapons, armor type, armor quantity (each side has a different value), and engine type.

You also get different skills and stuff, which is well-explained on the wiki:
    http://wiki.empiresmod.com/index.php?title=Main_Page

I still haven't used any class-specific skill because I didn't find it out myself and noone told me how, despite asking bazillions of times on servers, but apparently there's a dropdown menu somewhere when you're about to select a skill. Just so you know.

    so, yeah. Try it out.

    To explain skills:

You basically get to choose a skill at each promotion (every 10 points. Which you get 1 for killing, certain ammount of healing, etc). If you get the free skill I told you about when joining a squad your second skill you get at 20 points (since you already have the one at 10).

You select skills where you select loadout/class. You click on a slot and then you're at a menu where you select a skill (there is dropdown menu that selects between class-specific or general skills). You can swap them around, they're not permanent. But if you do swap them around take into consideration that they only activate on either your next spawn or if you switch them while in a spawn area (where you would change class. Like barracks). If you change class I think the selected skills reset so check them before spawning.
    MrDelish wrote: »

Yeah, the dropdown menu is there. When you're selecting a skill, in that window there is a way to select either general or class-specific skills. You really can't live without some of those. I don't know how I would be a Scout without Hide. That thing is amazing if you're patient.

Heh, I remember one time in that map where the Northern Faction defends (it's like 300 vs 3000 tickets) and the Brenodi have to slowly crawl through a city. Managed to get promoted all the way up, had all 4 skills as a Rifleman with the Machinegun. I was a killing machine there. In the end we won that one but damn, it's like the Brenodi wouldn't stop arriving in waves.
