Help me change my face (Glasses and Haircut)

Some of you may remember me from a thread about changing my image a couple of months ago. That had great response, so here I am again. First, what I have to work with:

Photo1.jpg

Okay, so here's what I'm looking for in terms of advice:

1)Haircut-Ironically, when I start loosing weight, and my face starts looking better, I realize I'm balding. I think it's noticible enough in the picture. So any advice/suggestion for hairstyles that would help me look decent while hiding/drawing away from that would be nice.

2)Eyeglasses-I really need to get new, modern glasses. I'm actually getting my eye exam on Friday morning, and I intend to go shopping for glasses afterwards. Any recomendations?

Thanks in advance.

If you're really balding, shave it down to a Bruce Willis-esque stubble.

Try for some geek chic glasses. Be prepared to spend a lot of money on them, you wear them everyday and they make your face. Don't cheap out. Designer names can get you a lot of places.

Don't buy those horrible square-thick glasses, though.

That works for some people. I don't see that working very well for him. This is coming from a guy who shaved clean for two years, so it's not like I'm against it on principle. Maybe let it grow out on the sides a bit more or cut it shorter on top so you don't have such a contrast between long/thinning hair and short/thick hair.

I had glasses very similar to yours, then I switched to these:

    I've had nothing but compliments.

I'd either lose the chin stubble or go with an actual beard.

I just got a new pair of glasses. They're pretty simple wire frames but they've got the outward curving temples. Coming from a 12-year glasses-wearing veteran; they're much more comfortable and don't interfere with side-of-your-head hair and sideburns.

Another thing I've recently started doing is wearing contact lenses w/ a pair of cheap non-prescription frames. Gives me some flexibility at a low cost(well, except for the contact lens part; but they're nice to have by themselves).

That was exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of. They look better with shaved heads I reckon, but yeah, you're probably right that it might not look too good on him.

And yes, lose the facial hair. Chicks don't dig getting rashes from kissing.

Also, your glasses are crooked in that photo. People notice and it will make you look sloppy in general. I had the same problem for a long time.

Edit: if you want a lot of great, great fashion advice in general, check out the Debate and Discourse Fashion thread, located here:

The facial hair needs to go, pronto. I like beards, but yours is too sparse and just looks like something a 13-year-old would grow to celebrate his first 10 chin hairs. Ick.

I think your hair needs to be less vertical and more horizontal; what you have going on now makes your face look boxy. Grow the sides out a little bit and don't gel the front up. If you're balding, own it; a guy who's balding can still be attractive, but a guy who's in denial and obviously trying to cover up his thinning hair is kind of pathetic.

You should get glasses that curve up at the sides, or at least, don't curve down. Your eyes are sort of slanted downwards anyway, and having the glasses follow that curve makes you look sleepy. And please smile! You look pissed off, and that's never attractive unless you're James Bond or something.

    Important advice.

I'd like to see you in a more horizontal, rectangular pair of glasses with thicker frames. Lose the chin stubble or grow out a nice goatee (which I am not sure is feasible because your facial hair looks really thin).

Your hair is far too short on the sides. It almost looks like you have a nice receding hairline (which doesn't necessarily look BAD) and then this weird tuft of hair on the front. I'd almost like you to lose all of that longer stuff and keep the recession.

When you go shopping for glasses, take a female friend with you, if you can. In fact, take someone you trust with you, male or female. If you're asking us for help, this shouldn't be a problem. Never hurts to have a second opinion.

Thanks for the advice. Do you guys think if I go to a more upscale hair place, rather than my usual 5 bucks barbershop, I could tell them I just want something that looks good, and comment on what you guys mentioned, and they could do something with my hair?

Well, your hair is a little on the short side at the moment, so there likely won't be much even a high-end salon will be able to do for you. I'd focus on the glasses issue, shave the beard, and let your hair grow out a bit more before visiting a salon. Also, don't worry about going somewhere too expensive. If you're paying more than say, $20 for a men's cut, I think you're paying too much. But you may feel differently.

Also, maybe it was just for the photo, but smile more. Smiling makes most anything look better.

Go for some upward curving thick black frames, smile and lose that face fur.

Don't go to a stylist 'til you have something to cut, and ask their advice. It takes a lot of hard work and training to become a proper haidresser / stylist, and they know what's best for you. Spend a bit on it too, don't just let the first schmuck with a set of clippers near it. Mine usually costs about £20 ($40ish) but it's always worth the money.
