Lingering Odors

Well, after cleaning the room desperately, getting two emails from the RA, and finally finding a post-it note on the door today, I've decided to come to the Internet on advice on how to get rid of odors that just won't go.

I'll admit that I'm not the cleanest person in the universe, but I tend to have messes that are not organic in nature. Sure, it'd be a good idea for me to clean out the fridge, but in the rest of the room it mostly consists of scattered papers and text books. My roommate, on the other hand, had a few disasters in the room earlier in the year (mostly having to do with losing perishable items under the bed and me locating them a few weeks later), and although they've been taken care of for probably 3/4 of a month now, there's still a persistent funk in the room. I'd suspect that there was something else yet to be found, but my roommate upturned her side of the room to try to find her ID card last week, and although there was plenty of trash, there wasn't anything that would have/had gone bad. I had gone through everything on my side after the first email, so I doubt I'm the cause.

That, and the smell has been getting better by at least a little bit. The weather got pleasant enough to crack open the window for the past two days, and the smell did dissipate a bit.

I wouldn't be all that concerned with this, but we live right across the hall from the RA's friends, who I suspect were the ones that posted the note today. Our room is definitely not "OMG, what is that stench!" strong enough to smell in the hallway; it's only vaguely unpleasant while in the room itself. In fact, it's only noticeable from the hall when we have the door open, which is only when we enter and exit the room. However, it seems they idly complain to the RA about this, which is what results in our warnings.

So, what could me and my roommate do to try to take care of this? We've been taking out the trash on a daily basis, cracking open the windows whenever the weather permits, and trying to take care of our laundry in a timely manner. What other steps do you guys recommend?

Um, first make sure that there's not an odor source still hanging around the room generating more. Second, keep the windows open whenever you're out of the room and possibly run a fan to circulate the air. You could get a Glade Plug-In or spray some Febreze or maybe a non-fragrance-based odor killer, which will work a little bit but it will also generate new smells to compete with the old one. You could also deploy some baking soda in containers around the room for a few days. If you have carpet, sprinkle a small quantity of carpet deodorizer on it, leave it there for a bit, and vacuum. A dehumidifier would be a last option.

If you can't find a source, I would throw everything onto another bed/high spot in the room and just mop the area that you think is causing the offending smell. Get some crazy industrial cleaner and yeah. That should take care of it.

    Hopefully.

If they were under her bed I'd bet that theres probably alittle funk in her mattress. clean carpet, upholstery and bedding would be a good thing to give a wash because they can hold smells, and freshening them will serve as air fresheners for the room if you use a good fabric softener/some fabreeze.

Disinfect your room top to bottom, open a window and put a fan in front of it, facing in with some dryer sheets on the back (at least, thats what I do)

Well, we have definitely gotten rid of all the original sources of the smell. Beds overturned, drawers emptied out, the whole shebang. I've been using a Febreeze knock-off that is labeled an odor neutralizer, although on closer inspection it doesn't really say anything about "killing odor causing bacteria" and all that other stuff that commercials brag about. Still need to mop/vacuum, but quite a bit has been done.

Blargh, I was hoping that there was something we could do that didn't involve opening the window, but I guess it can't be helped. I am so going to hate this, as I have the window bed and the smell is a little bit stronger on my roommate's side, so the windows going to have to stay open quite a bit. Guess I can just start spending a lot of time over in the math building.

Can odors seep into the plastic-covered slabs that constitute mattresses at college? My roommate hasn't really bothered with bedding since the first week or so of school when she kicked it all off in her sleep and never put it back on. If the odor managed to get into that thing, I have no clue how we'll ever get rid of it.
