So, my semi-annual car insurance bill has come in, and I have a couple of weeks to renew it. However, I'm not certain if I'm getting the best rate. I'm paying $550 or so every six months. At 28 years without a single major accident, that seems high to me. This will be the first time I ever seriously considered switching insurance, so I'm not sure how to best compare rates and benefits per company. Is there any kind of web site or other system that helps me cut out every companies respective bullshit?
You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.
Well, it depends on what type of coverage you have, and what you actually need. Websites aren't really going to give you a concise view as they all use arbitrary figures to give you an initial quote. I'd recommend actually visiting with your agent (and agents from other companies) physically to see what they can do for you. You never know, after looking over your policy your current agent may find ways that'll save you money.
My wife is a branch manager for an insurance agency (in New York, so no help to you unfortunately) and she would definitely suggest browsing around a few agencies in your area, most agencies sell policies from several different insurance companies, and can easily compare rates between them to get you the best deal.
Also, see if you can find a place that will allow you to write a 1 year policy in stead of a 6 month policy, as you'll save quite a bit across the whole year. Though not many/all places can do them.
$550 isn't spectacular, but it isn't that bad either really.

Consider yourself lucky.
That said, it's not too bad. Try Esurance.
